The Crimson Countdown is officially on for the 2023 Oklahoma football season. It’s the second season under head coach Brent Venables and expectations are high once again. The Sooners are looking to rebound from the uncharacteristic 6-7 season in 2022.

Every day as we get closer to kickoff, SoonerScoop.com will count down the days with you. Starting with No. 99 and working our way to No. 0, we’ll be there every step of the way.

Crimson Countdown: No. 21 Reggie Pearson

2022 stats: Played in 12 games (10 starts) with 55 tackles, two interceptions, a fumble recovery and four pass breakups at Texas Tech.

2023 outlook:

Perhaps we look back in December and say how important the addition of Reggie Pearson was to the Sooners secondary. The haul Oklahoma made in the transfer portal was intentional. The focus of those efforts, of course, was on the defensive line but don’t overlook the importance of Pearson’s arrival from Lubbock.

In a preseason camp battle with Key Lawrence at free safety Pearson brings with him plenty of experience. Even more important is his versatility. Brent Venables has spoke at length about getting the best 11 players on the field. Could Pearson also help add depth at Cheetah? Certainly feels that way.

“The great defensive players, it’s about anticipation, and that comes from experience,” said safeties coach Brandon Hall. “He does a really good job of seeing the field and knowing where he’s at on the field and playing off other peoples’ mannerisms. That’s been the biggest thing for him — (he) saw a lot of live bullets in his life.”

Long story short: Reggie Pearson will be part of the Oklahoma secondary this season.

2023 safety outlook:

On paper this group is rather intriguing. Pearson’s arrival adds much-needed experience. Billy Bowman and Key Lawrence return to the fold alongside heralded recruit Peyton Bowen. Robert Spears-Jennings got a taste last season and is expected to be in the mix once he’s fully cleared for full contact following shoulder surgery. It’s a good mix of experience and talent inside Brandon Hall’s room. This position group could be the most improved by season’s end.
