OU freshman Lewis Carter turning heads

It’s hard for true freshmen that are not mid-year enrollees to make an immediate impact. You’re just playing from behind in missing all those months on campus.

Linebacker Lewis Carter is in that position for OU, but it doesn’t seem to matter. Carter has been in Norman for less than two months, and it’s obvious he’s already turning heads.

Leaders of the team would know, and linebacker Danny Stutsman was quick to say be on the watch for Carter in 2023.

“I think, kind of my guy right now is Lewis Carter,” said Stutsman at Big 12 media days. “He’s a Florida boy as well. So I mean, every workout he’s running next to me. He’s getting reps next to me. I’m teaching him as much as I can about the playbook, you know, tips and tricks that I know that can help him when he gets the opportunity.”

Stutsman can relate, too. He also wasn’t a mid-year enrollee for the 2021 class. But if you’re good, you’ll play your way onto the field.

Stutsman did that in 2021, and Carter might do that as well coming up this season.

Carter isn’t alone, though. Stutsman went through the list of freshmen linebackers who arrived in June and knew exactly what to say about how they’re standing out early at OU.

Taylor Heim from Oklahoma. Super fast, super talented,” Stutsman said. “Lewis Carter. He’s a freak in the weight room. You know, we’re benching. He did 350 pounds for six reps and that’s, that’s unheard of, you know. And then Sammy, I’m not gonna try his last name (Omosigho) but you know, he’s a natural talent out there at Cheetah.

“And it’s just so many young guys that you know, we’re gonna be all right. They’re gonna catch up to the program that us older guys can teach them, and they’re gonna be miles ahead of where I was last year.”

Read that again for Carter. Benching 350 pounds six times. These are the types of linebackers head coach Brent Venables is officially bringing to OU again.
