The Crimson Countdown is officially on for the 2023 Oklahoma football season. It’s the second season under head coach Brent Venables and expectations are high once again. The Sooners are looking to rebound from the uncharacteristic 6-7 season in 2022.

Every day as we get closer to kickoff, SoonerScoop.com will count down the days with you. Starting with No. 98 and working our way to No. 0, we’ll be there every step of the way.

Crimson Countdown: No. 14 General Booty

2022 stats: Booty had one appearance, against TCU.

2023 Outlook: It hasn’t taken long for Booty to become one of college football’s most well-known names. However, he has seemed to fill the role that Jeff Lebby hoped for when he brought him to Norman last summer.

Booty may not be part of the plans at the position but he’s given Oklahoma quality depth and has helped the Sooners through day after day of practice. And as both Dillon Gabriel and Jackson Arnold have stated Oklahoma’s quarterback room is a tight knit unit.

The Sooners will hope their experienced senior and five-star freshman will take care of the 2023 season but Booty is one of the pieces that helps a roster keep moving in the offseason. And the biggest hope will be, Oklahoma can push things forward enough to give Booty plenty of snaps this year.

2023 quarterback outlook

Dillon Gabriel will lead the quarterbacks in 2023, returning as a four-year starter at UCF (2019-2021) and OU (2022). But the quarterback room is deeper this season with the addition of true freshman Jackson Arnold. A former five-star recruit, Arnold has high expectations, but he’ll have to wait his turn behind Gabriel. Redshirt junior Davis Beville and Booty round out the room, both returning from last season. Jeff Lebby has done a nice job rebuilding the Sooners’ quarterback room in first two seasons in Norman.
