The 2023 recruiting class for South Carolina Gamecocks football continues to take shape with signatures rolling in during the first day of the December early signing period.

The latest prospect to officially ink with the Gamecock program is Taylor County HS (Perry, FL) safety Cameron Upshaw.

He is ranked by the On3 Consensus as the No. 979 prospect nationally regardless of position, in addition to the 89th-ranked Saftey prospect nationally and the No. 139 prospect in the state of Florida.

South Carolina Gamecocks recruiter: Torrian Gray

Other scholarship offers: Florida State, Maryland, Arkansas

Why South Carolina? “It feels like home as far as me hanging around with the coaches. Even the players, too,” Upshaw said after his official visit. “It feels like home. I feel like I could see myself coming here, staying in the city, and being a big asset to South Carolina football.”

Scouting report from On3: We’re pretty high on Cameron Upshaw relative to the rest of the industry (industry comparison here) and I think there’s a lot to like there. First off, he has great size, measuring at 6-foot-2.5, 185 pounds with a 6-foot-6 wing-span. Upshaw has also tested pretty well, running an electronic 4.72 40-yard dash this spring. That may not blow some away, but trust me when I say that’s a good time relative to other top safeties.

Upshaw is also young for the class – he just turned 17 years old. Upshaw has played all over the field for his high school, which is generally a good sign for a safety prospect. He has good range with his length and shows a willingness to get physical as a cover-down defender. The athleticism, ball skills and playmaking ability are also on display when he lines up on offense at both quarterback and receiver.

About GamecockCentral.com

Gamecock Central has five full-time employees and several part-time specialists and has been a fully-credentialed media outlet for 20 years.

But that hasn’t always been the case.

Here’s a message from Gamecock Central founder Brian Shoemaker:

Crazy Start

Gamecock Central was started as a hobby.

It immediately turned into an all-encompassing passion.

In late 1999, it became my full-time job.

Today, I remain the owner.

Pretty good for a guy who failed his first computer class at USC.

My family and I are extremely fortunate. My wife prefers to say we’re blessed.

Passion

The reason we exist separates us from other media outlets.

I had no thoughts of the site becoming a business.

The first attempt at generating revenue didn’t occur until 10 months after launch when ads were added.

Gamecock Central’s foundation — our roots, our basic DNA — will always be different than other sites.

Certainly, we have a bottom line, but there’s a bigger picture.

Professional Coverage

Of course, passion alone isn’t enough to satisfy our subscribers.

We have a tremendous team of insiders, analysts, and photographers.

They provide the most in-depth, accurate, and professional coverage of Gamecock sports and recruiting.

And we have The Insiders Forum. It’s where the most hardcore fans hang out and discuss the Gamecocks.

Some are positive, some are “realistic” and some probably yell too much, but they all love Carolina.
