South Carolina has found its transfer portal quarterback, adding SEC experience and athleticism to the position group with the addition of former Oregon and Auburn QB Robby Ashford.

The 6-foot-3, 212-pound Ashford committed to South Carolina today after taking a visit to the school this weekend.

Ashford, who started his career at Oregon and then returned to his home state to play for Auburn, has two years of eligibility left.

Ashford was a necessary addition to a South Carolina quarterback room that features a high-upside redshirt freshman in LaNorris Sellers and a recently enrolled true freshman Dante Reno, but is short on meaningful experience.

Ashford served as Auburn’s starter in 2022 before giving way to Payton Thorne this past season.

A Hoover, Ala, native who graduated from Hoover High in 2020, Ashford signed with Oregon as a four-star prospect and was ranked the No. 23 quarterback and No. 318 overall prospect in his class, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average of the major recruiting rankings.

A former two-sport standout, Ashford was considered the top high school baseball prospect in his class in the state of Alabama by Perfect Game. He played 20 games as an outfielder for the Ducks in the spring of 2021, making 10 starts.

Ashford is the 17th scholarship transfer portal addition to the Gamecocks’ roster this offseason.

South Carolina also recently added former Pitt and Oklahoma quarterback Davis Beville, a Greenville, S.C. native and former Greenville High standout, to the team as a preferred walk-on.

The additions of Ashford and Beville should round out the quarterback room for 2024.
