Shane Beamer and the South Carolina Gamecocks secured one of the biggest recruiting wins since his arrival on campus with the commitment of five-star EDGE Dylan Stewart on Tuesday.

As pretty much any Gamecock fan on the planet by now knows, Stewart was a high-priority target for Beamer and recruiter of record Sterling Lucas and chose South Carolina over finalists Ohio State, Georgia, Miami, and Maryland.

One of the more interesting features On3 provides on the profiles of top prospects is the “reminds us of” section which offers fans an easy player comparison as a guide for the prospect’s skill set.

Stewart’s On3 comparison is former first-round pick Jaelan Phillips.

Dylan Stewart’s size, athleticism and ability to bend remind us of former top prospect Jaelan Phillips. Both had projectable physical skills at the same stage. Phillips was a bit more productive and longer.

A five-star prospect out of Redlands (Calif.) Redlands East Valley, Phillips was the No. 1 overall prospect in the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average of the four major recruiting media sites.

Phillips originally signed with UCLA but ultimately transferred to Miami, collecting 8.5 sacks and 15.5 tackles-for-loss as a junior.

Phillips remained in Miami after the Dolphins picked him with the No. 18 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, a selection he has rewarded by collecting a combined 103 tackles and 15.5 sacks during his first two seasons in the league.

Stewart’s On3 profile also provides an evaluation of his entire game from On3 Director of Scouting and Rankings Charles Power.

Big, athletic pass rusher with the most complete physical skill set among 2024 EDGE prospects. Measured at 6-foot-5, 250 pounds with a 33.5-inch arm and 10.5-inch hand prior to his senior season. Added around 20 pounds of mass during his junior year. Clocked 40 yard dashes in the 4.6 second range at college camps as a rising junior.

Has rare movement skills at his size. Flies around the field with a burst that pops off the screen. Lines up all over the front seven at his high school. Often plays in a two-point stance, both as a stand up rusher and off-ball linebacker.

Shows high-end flexibility as a pass rusher. Stays low and turns the corner at high speeds with strong curvilinear movement. Dangerous on stunts and twists. Closes extremely quickly behind the line of scrimmage. Strong finisher in part due to his combination of speed and size.

Finished his junior season with 16 sacks, which stacks up on the high end among his peers. Will need to continue developing to maximize his considerable talent.

Stewart is the No. 10 overall prospect and No. 2 EDGE in the 2024 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is also the No. 1 player in D.C.
