If you like signing day drama you had it with this one. And it went straight up until the final hours. Nyckoles Harbor’s long awaited decision as to where he’ll be committing to school came to an end on Wednesday when the 5-star athlete made it official that he’ll be attending the University of South Carolina.

Rated as the No.1 athlete for the class of 2023, Harbor becomes the highest gamecock commitment in the Shane Beamer era. Listed at 6-5, 230 pounds, the D.C. product has excelled at both football and track and field. Running a 6.64 in the 60 meters, not only is that the quickest time in high school right now but it’s also opened up talks about the possibility of him one day competing as an Olympian.

Harbor chooses USC over Oregon, Maryland, Michigan and Miami. Towards the end, Gamecock Central was told that it really became a two-team race between South Carolina and Oregon. The Ducks tried to make a last minute push, which involved conversations with Nike owner Phil Knight, but in the end it wasn’t enough to get Harbor to become a Duck.

While Beamer will receive a lot of the credit, and rightfully so, what shouldn’t be overlooked is the impact USC track and field coach Curtis Frye also had in Harbor’s recruitment. The legendary track coach has coached 28 olympians. Of that group 14 of them have earned medals. In addition, edge coach Sterling Lucas and tight ends coach Jody Wright were also instrumental in Harbor’s commitment.

While Harbor’s athletic abilities speak for themself, the impact of his commitment is much greater than that.

Former Gamecock 5-star running running back Marcus Lattimore told Gamecock Central on Wednesday, “Elite athletes from all across the country will start to take notice because of his commitment. Harbor will recruit and create a domino effect. His testimony is powerful just like how Alshon (Jeffery) and Stephon (Gilmore)’s was to my decision.”
