Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers is collecting plenty of preseason accolades, and that continued on Monday when On3’s national college football columnist Jesse Simonton labeled Ewers as the No. 3 player on his list of top 10 Heisman Trophy candidates.

Ewers was listed behind reigning Heisman trophy winner Caleb Williams and Florida State quarterback Jordan Travis. Ewers ranked ahead of a slew of quarterbacks including of Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy, LSU’s Jayden Daniels, North Carolina’s Drake Maye, Notre Dame’s Sam Hartman, Washington’s Michael Penix, and Clemson’s Cade Klubnik. Ohio State wideout Marvin Harrison Jr. was the only non-quarterback on the list.

Easily the Big 12’s most likely Heisman Trophy contender, Ewers was officially anointed QB1 for the Longhorns this spring after holding off Maalik Murphy and Arch Manning.

The former No. 1 overall recruit flashed his 5-star talent against Alabama and Oklahoma last season, but he also struggled with injuries and inconsistencies. But after a strong spring and surrounded by the best supporting cast of playmakers not at Ohio State, Ewers should have a monster sophomore season.

Beat Alabama in Week 2 or take Texas to the Big 12 Championship and Ewers will be among the favorites to win the award come the end of the year.

Simonton already described Ewers as the Big 12’s top Heisman candidate ahead of Oklahoma’s Dillon Gabriel, Kansas State’s Will Howard, Texas Tech’s Tyler Shough, and TCU’s Chandler Morris.

During his debut season with the Longhorns in 2022, Ewers was 172-for-296 for 2177 yards, 15 touchdowns, and six interceptions. He left Week 2’s Alabama game due to injury and missed three more contests before returning versus Oklahoma and starting the remainder of the season.

Texas’ last Heisman Trophy winner was Ricky Williams, who won the award following the 1998 season. He joined 1977 winner Earl Campbell as Texas’ two Heisman winners. The Longhorns have had seven players finished in the top three of voting. In addition to Campbell and Williams, James Saxton finished 3rd in 1961, Roosevelt Leaks finished third in 1973, Vince Young finished 2nd in 2005, and Colt McCoy finished 2nd in 2008 and 3rd in 2009.
