Hoops routs FSU in trip to Tampa

The Texas A&M men’s basketball team and coach Bucky McMillan picked up their first win over a power conference opponent this season by trouncing the Florida State Seminoles Friday in Tampa, 95-59.

The Aggies (6-2) had struggled defensively before this matchup, but clamped down on the Seminoles. FSU shot 29% from the floor and 22% from 3-point range for the game, while the Aggies shot 44% from both the field and beyond the arc.

Texas A&M started the game on an 11-0 run, getting 3-pointers from Jacari Lane and Ruben Dominguez during the outburst. After FSU made a 3 of their own, the Aggies went on another 8-0 run to make it 19-3 and the rout was on.

A&M was up 52-24 at the half, with Dominguez scoring 15 of his team-high 21 points on 5-6 shooting from 3-point range. Forward Rashaun Agee was one rebound short of a double-double at intermission, then added another 7 points and 8 rebounds in the second half to finish with 17 points and 17 rebounds.

The Aggies had a total of four players in double digits, with Pop Isaacs (15 points in 21 minutes) and Mackenzie Mgbako (10 points) joining Dominguez and Agee. Guard Marcus Hill added 7 points and a team-high 5 assists.

A&M shot 80% from the free throw line (20-25), while FSU only made 47% (8-17) of attempts.

Aggies fall to 7th in AP, Coaches polls

Texas A&M’s 27-17 loss to rival Texas Friday not only stung, but likely ended their chances at a first round bye in the College Football Playoff. The Aggies (11-1, 7-1 SEC) ended up with their best record in 33 years, but the loss knocked them from third to seventh in both the Associated Press and Coaches polls.

In the AP poll, A&M is ranked behind Ole Miss (6th) and Texas Tech (5th), while the Rebels and Red Raiders flip spots in the Coaches poll.

The College Football Playoff rankings will be updated Tuesday night, and A&M is, according to most analysts, likely to be the sixth seed and will host a home playoff game.

Volleyball grabs 3 seed in NCAA Tournament

The NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Tournament gets underway later this week, and the No. 6 Texas A&M volleyball team now knows who they’ll face. The Aggies are a 3 seed in the tournament and will host the first two rounds at Reed Arena. A&M (23-4) will first face Campbell (23-6) in their opener, Friday night at 6:30 p.m.

If Texas A&M advances, the Aggies will play the winner of the match between fifth-seeded TCU and Stephen F. Austin Saturday night at 7 p.m. The Aggies will be looking for some payback if the Horned Frogs advance, as they beat A&M 3-2 in a match in Fort Worth on Sept. 10.

Aggies in the NFL

Miami Dolphins running back Devon Achane cracked the 1,000-yard barrier for the first time in his NFL career Saturday as he rushed for 134 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries. Achane now has 1,034 yards on the season, with 428 of that total coming in the last three games — all wins. Linebacker Tyrel Dodson had 8 tackles for the Dolphins.

Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett moved closer to the NFL’s all-time single season sack record as he tallied his 19th of the year Sunday in a 26-8 loss to the San Fransisco 49ers. Garrett ended the game with 5 tackles, 2 tackles for loss and 3 quarterback hits to go with his sack.

Indianapolis Colts linebacker Buddy Johnson had 3 tackles and cornerback Jaylon Jones had 2 in a 20-16 loss to the Houston Texans.

New York Jets defensive end Micheal Clemons had 2 tackles, including his first sack of the year, as the Jets beat the Atlanta Falcons 27-24.

Jacksonville Jaguars safety Antonio Johnson racked up 4 tackles in a 25-3 win over the Tennessee Titans.

Carolina Panthers safety Demani Richardson had a pair of tackles and defensive end Nic Scourton added one as the Panthers upended the L.A. Rams 31-28.
