Are Some Fans Beginning to SLEEP on Malik Benson? | Alabama Football

Counting down the Alabama roster three players at a time. Next up for the 2023 series: wide receiver Shazz Preston; safety Bray Hubbard; and inside linebacker Trezmen Marshall.

18 WR Shazz Preston

2022: As a true freshman, Preston saw action in five games as a wide receiver: Louisiana-Monroe, Vanderbilt, Mississippi State, Austin Peay and Kansas State.

Of note: Preston heads into his second season vying for a rotational role at either the X or Z positions. Possesses good speed, but likely to make an impact more in the intermediate pass game and on contested catches. In the spring, Preston worked alongside Jermaine Burton and Kobe Prentice in the A-Day game. He was targeted twice in the scrimmage but didn’t have a reception. Beyond Burton and Ja’Corey Brooks, Preston’s primary competition for game reps will come from Malik Benson, Kendrick Law and Emmanuel Henderson. The sophomore might also factor on special teams.

18 S Bray Hubbard

2022: As a senior at Ocean Spring (Ms.) High School, Hubbard passed for 2,197 yards and 21 touchdowns and rushed for 1,760 yards and 20 scores. Was selected as Mississippi’s Class 6A Mr. Football for the second year in a row. According to the On3 Industry Ranking, Hubbard ranked as the No. 26 safety prospect for the 2023 cycle. He enrolled at Alabama in January and took part in spring drills.

Of note: Hubbard held up well in his initial A-Day, which saw him line up alongside Jake Pope with the White (second-team) defense. In the scrimmage, Hubbard recorded five solo tackles, including one for loss. With limited time spent on defense in high school, he’s still a bit of a work in progress where technical aspects of safety play are concerned. Still, in watching him close ground quickly before dropping running back Justice Haynes in the open field, it was easy to see how — even in a summer camp setting — his combination of athleticism and instincts made a big impression on the UA staff. Those attributes could get him on the field in a special teams role fairly quickly.

17 ILB Trezmen Marshall

2022: In his fourth and final season at Georgia, Marshall saw action in 14 games. As a reserve linebacker and special teamer, he amassed 19 total tackles, including 4.5 for loss, a sack, an interception and five quarterback hurries. Marshall transferred to Alabama following the season and took part in 2023 spring drills.

Of note: Riding a wave of good health for the first time since the 2019 season, Marshall worked alongside Jihaad Campbell with the Crimson (first-team) defense in April’s A-Day game. In the scrimmage, Marshall produced four tackles. Throughout the practice, Marshall was in good position, keeping gains to a minimum while working against both the run and pass. In pairing with Deontae Lawson during the early stages of fall camp, Marshall continued to see time with the first-team defense. Viability at the mike could free Lawson up to work off the ball in base and nickel.
