More Stuff You Should Know About The Stony Brook Seawolves

Jameel Warney is Good
You’ve heard about him all week, but here’s a little more. The 18 field goals he knocked down on Saturday vs. Vermont tied Oklahoma State’s Jawun Evans for the most in Division I this season. His 23-rebound game against UMBC earlier this month were the second-most in Division I this season.
He will finish his career leading in most of Stony Brook’s statistical categories. He’s the all-time leader in points (2,109), rebounds (1,260), blocks (274) and games played (134) regardless of division.
Warney Doesn’t Do It All By Himself
Warney may have averaged 30 points a game during the conference tournament, but senior point guard Carson Puriefoy was not far behind, scoring 20 points per game through the three game. The third senior, Rayshaun McGrew, complements the two with a consistent 10 points and 6 rebounds per game as the smaller forward.
Warney did well vs. MKG
At this point we all know that Warney went to the same school as Isaiah Briscoe. What you didn’t know is that his junior season at Roselle Catholic was ended by Michael Kidd-Gilchrist’s St. Patrick’s. Warney scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough for the win.
Kentucky isn’t the Only Team with an International Presence
It will be difficult for anyone to have more than Kentucky’s five international players, but Stony Brook is coming in hot with three. 6’6″ forward Akwasi Yeboah is from Chigwell, England, 6’6″ Roland Nama is from Frankfurt, Germany, and 6’11” center Jakub Petras is from Rejec, Slovakia.
The Long List of Notable Alumni…
…begins and ends with Joe Nathan. It doesn’t get much better than the former pitcher for the Detroit Tigers.
They have not been Successful vs. the Top 25
The Seawolves are 1-10 all time vs. Top 25 opponents, although they came close to adding one for the win column at #17 Vanderbilt earlier this year. Their only win was a 62-57 victory over #13 Washington last year. In fact, they’ve only beaten one other FBS school, a 2006 win over Penn State. The Cats are currently tied with the Miami Hurricanes at #10 in the AP Poll.
