Randall Cobb grew up just down the road from Neyland Stadium. The former Kentucky Wildcat has experienced plenty of pain in this rivalry game, but he believes Tennessee is on upset alert.

“Hopefully we can pull one out,” Cobb said on Friday night. “You know, (UK) had a close game last week against Texas. If we can find a way to put some points on the board, get in the red zone and maybe not go for it on fourth down every time and take the three points when we can, maybe we can find a way to get a win.”

Cobb was in the stands a week ago with a ton of other former Wildcats for the game against Texas. Kentucky took the fight to the Longhorns, but came up just short of a victory, falling 16-13 in overtime.

It probably felt like deja vu for Cobb. No. 18 was outstanding against Tennessee in 2009. The wide receiver split time at quarterback during his Kentucky career. In his final meeting against the Vols, the team in orange struggled to slow down Cobb out of the Wildcat formation.

Cobb completed a pass for 31 yards, caught four passes for 24, and ran the ball 18 times for 101 yards and a score. Unfortunately, Kentucky needed one more.

Trailing by three points late in the game against Lane Kiffin’s crew, Kentucky forced a fumble in Tennessee territory. Cobb ran the ball out of the Wildcat down to the 10-yard line. That’s when the Cats got a little too cute and took it out of his hands. They had to settle for a field goal, forcing overtime. Tennessee would go on to win 30-24.

During his three-year career in Lexington, Cobb rushed for 1,313 yards and 22 touchdowns. He also has 1,661 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns, along with 689 passing yards and five touchdowns through the air.

It’s been a Hall of Fame year for the former Wildcat. Last month, he was inducted into the Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame with Tayshaun Prince. On Friday night, he returned to Alcoa High School to be enshrined in the high school’s Hall of Fame. Cobb led Alcoa to two state titles and during his senior year he completed 89 of 139 passes for 1,765 yards and 22 touchdowns, while also rushing for 793 yards and 13 scores.
