WHAT’S UP TODAY

First up this morning in your Miami Hurricanes news?

There was your second spring practice session yesterday, and we had your full coverage including videos of the day’s work, news and notes from the practice field and post-practice interviews including with offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson. So don’t miss all that.

Plus we had your coverage of Miami’s home basketball finale against Boston College – an eighth loss in a row – as well as the baseball team’s midweek game which ended with a come-from-behind one run win.

And there is more recruiting news as well, including updaets with several of the Miami Central players that watched practice yesterday.

A visitor for practice was Miami (Fla.) Central four-star safety Amari Wallace. The Canes have put themselves in a good spot with him, and he shares his thoughts.

Also on campus for practice was Miami (Fla.) Central defensive lineman Floyd Boucard … and he landed a Cane offer. Find out his take on where things stand now.

There were updates with other Central players that watched practice as well.

Plus we catch up with Palm Beach (Fla.) Central 2025 four-star receiver Waden Charles. He has other programs pushing hard, so where do the Canes stand?

And, as always, stay tuned today for any news that may come up.

MESSAGE BOARD POST OF THE DAY

Early Spring/Pre-Season Thoughts re: Ward … Posted by advarkas

This is a make or break year for Mario (10 total wins, no excuses), and Ward will play the most signficant factor (obviously) in determining whether this team can achieve that mark.

With a better OL, running game, and overall roster around him, I expect Cam Ward to have a solid season, solidfying himself as a First Round Draft Pick, which in turn would presumably help Mario lure future transfer QBs in the Portal.

I’ve looked at a bunch of Wazzu highlights and the footage from the first day of Spring Practice, and a few things stand out to me early:

(1) Quick Release. Balls gets out early, and it doesn’t look like he needs a lot of effort to generate arm strength

(2) Throwing Platforms. Ward can make accurate throws from a few different platforms, and without having his feet completely set (unlike TVD). He was a career 65.6% Completion % at Wazzu with 48 TDs and 16 INTs (3-1 ratio, which is excellent). A lot of his throws were made while not completely set due the pass rush, rolling out, etc., yet he exhibited good accuracy in those situations throwing short, medium, and deep.

(3) Eyes Downfield. A lot of running/dual-threat QBs simply tuck the ball and run when the pass protection breaks down in the pocket. With Ward’s career highlights, I’ve noticed that he does a good job of keeping his eyes downfield, or at a minimum “resetting” his eyes to read the field while on the move, instead of just simply tucking the ball and running

(4) Comfortability and Confidence. At least an early stage here, Ward comes across as confident, not cocky; Comfortable, not complacent; humble and hungry to solidfy his Draft Stock for next year while helping this team win 10+ games.

Make no mistake – Ward is a mercenary, but the match between Ward and The U is fortutious one for both sides, and both sides stand to greatly benefit from each other. Mario and the staff did an excellent job selling Ward on The U, but Mario cannot simply rely on portal QBs for long-term success here. SOONER than later, Mario and his offensive staff MUST begin to develop QBs and have one here for 2-3 years who can provide both sustainable and stable success at the QB position.

Looking forward to the Spring Game on April 13!

MIAMI HURRICANES QUOTE OF THE DAY

“The quarterback room is talented. There are some talented guys there. It’s fun to watch those guys. It’s our jobs as coaches to make rooms uncomfortable, right? And more rooms need to get really uncomfortable, because you’re only going to grow if you’re really uncomfortable. If someone isn’t pushing you, you’re probably not going to reach your potential.”
