Miami Hurricanes quarterback Tyler Van Dyke and his family have informed the Miami Hurricanes that he will not enter the transfer portal or the NFL Draft and will return in 2023 as Miami’s starting quarterback, multiple sources have told CaneSport.

Van Dyke has incredible value at Miami and will again be set up for significant NIL opportunities. He is represented by Rosenhaus Sports in NIL contracts.

When Van Dyke went down injured against Duke, it quickly became apparent that neither Jake Garcia or Jacurri Brown – the team’s two backups – were ready for the bigtime stage.

Garcia threw three interceptions against Duke, then had just 125 passing yards starting the next game against Virginia. Brown wound up starting the following Georgia Tech game but threw for just 136 yards as a run-first QB. Against Clemson and Pitt the final two games both QBs played, but struggled to get the offense going until the second half of the Pitt game in a blowout. Garcia played his best football of the season in that half, finishing 17 of 28 for 192 yards with two touchdowns. It is unknown if Garcia and Brown will return to battle to back-up Van Dyke in 2023 or head to the transfer portal.

So Miami badly needs Van Dyke back as a proven QB with NFL arm talent. His 2022 season was unquestionably rocky. In the first four games, he didn’t pass for more than 261 yards and had two games under 200 yards while throwing four TDs and three interceptions. Then he got on a roll against North Carolina and Virginia Tech, throwing for 496 yards with three TDs vs. UNC and 342 yards with two scores against the Hokies.

Miami’s offense appeared headed in the right direction. but then the right shoulder injury hit after Van Dyke was 11-16 for 81 yards with a TD against Duke. He tried to come back against FSU and then Pitt but didn’t make it past the first series, with the shoulder injury flaring up again. He ended the season with a 63.2 completion percentage and 10 TDs with five INTs.

But Van Dyke remains one of the best passing talents in college football. He finished the 2021 season with six straight 300-yard passing games, leading some to speculate he’d be a first round NFL Draft pick this April. That speculation fizzled quickly when Van Dyke struggled early on this year in the new Josh Gattis offense, but next year will bring a new opportunity with a heavily revamped roster.
