The high school football season kicked off in Michigan on Thursday night across the state. All eyes were on the 17th annual Xenith Prep Kickoff Classic from Tom Adams Field at Wayne State University for West Bloomfield’s showdown with Sterling Heights Stevenson. There, a pair of 2023 Michigan football commits shined in wide receiver Semaj Morgan and offensive lineman Amir Herring.

The Lakers bludgeoned Stevenson by a score of 47-7 with most of West Bloomfield’s starters out of the game by the end of the third quarter. The night was headlined by an incredible performance from Morgan, who finished with 9 catches for 168 yards and a touchdown with an 81-yard kickoff return thrown in for good measure.

Morgan is currently ranked a three-star prospect, the No. 76 wideout in the country and the 11th-ranked player in the state of Michigan by the On3 Consensus. Herring rates out at four stars, the No. 19 interior offensive lineman in the class and the fourth-best player in state.

Michigan wide receivers coach Ron Bellamy previously led the West Bloomfield program and has a connection to both players. They are also former teammates with sophomore running back Donovan Edwards. Both men got a shoutout from the current West Bloomfield stars after the game.

The Wolverine was able to catch up with both Michigan commits following their victory on Thursday night in Downtown Detroit, which can be seen in the video below.

One key quote from Semaj Morgan: “Coach Bellamy knows I’m a dog. He expects me to go out there and be a leader. Make big plays when I’m supposed to. It is a mutual thing with us. We both know what I want and I know what he wants.”

One key quote from Amir Herring: “Coaches have been talking to us about just focusing on our senior year and enjoying the time and seizing the moment. Coach [Jim] Harbaugh has talked about that too. Enjoy our senior year and be kids before we get up to Ann Arbor.
