Wasn’t always pretty, but OU found a way in the 28-11 victory against visiting SMU on Saturday night. The SoonerScoop crew was out in full force for postgame interviews as Brent Venables’ group moved to 2-0.

Here is the best of the best from the players following the victory.

QB Dillon Gabriel

Finishing mindset?

“I’d say midseason (last year). It’s something we talked about. It was the emphasis and the strain. I remember one-on-one tug-of-wars and the look in people’s eyes of finding ways to win and compete. It’s something that you live for as a competitor. I go back to those days. All those days built up coming into now is something that we really pride ourselves on.”

RB Tawee Walker

Your performance?

“I feel like it was important. DeMarco has been stressing that running back is the heart of the offense, so we need to make something happen for the team to make something happen. That’s what I did today. That’s what the running backs did today.”

WR Andrel Anthony

To already have 10 catches after two games?

“It means a lot, just from the trust from the OC, our receivers coach and our QB. Trust is a big thing for me and I want all the trust I can have because I’ll make the play.”

LB Danny Stutsman

Do you lose this game last year?

“I think so. I think last year when adversity struck, both sides kind of came at each other a bit. We really had the offense’s back tonight. Something we really worked on. We were great on third and fourth down. We’ve made so much improvement. I’m so proud of how far we’ve come, but we still have a long ways to go.”

Cheetah LB Justin Harrington

Why is this defense different?

“Just experience, a lot. Just knowing your job, knowing what other people are doing. And pretty much just simply having your teammates back. We went through summer workouts, fall camp a whole spring, you just have a different type of respect with the guys. It’s year 2 with some of the guys, it’s tear 1 and you showed them that this is our standard for the year 1 guys. And you just keep going and keep pushing the standard with the year 2 guys, because we’ve already been in it a year so we kind of know what to expect.”

S Peyton Bowen

Blocked punt?

“Man, I wasn’t even supposed to go, I ain’t gonna lie. I was supposed to help block for a blocker and then it kind of just like — we didn’t get lined up correctly early. And he blocked so hard down I saw no guard, like no shield and I was like let’s go make a play. And that’s what I did and it ended up working out in our favor. It was one of those take a risk moments and it worked.”
