Watch: Dan Lanning discusses Oregon's running backs, adding Chase Cota
Oregon has no shortage of intriguing running back options at its disposal.
With Byron Cardwell returning after a bright freshman season, Sean Dollars now back healthy, and Noah Whittington having transferred into the program, the Ducks have a talented, versatile stable of ball carriers.
During his Tuesday press conference, Oregon coach Dan Lanning met with reporters and discussed his team’s depth at the position. He was asked specifically about what he has seen from Dollars this spring. A former 4-star signee who came to Oregon with no shortage of hype, Dollars flashed promising glimpses as a redshirt freshman in 2020, but his 2021 season was wiped out by injury.
Cardwell burst onto the scene with some dynamic performances as a true freshman after officially Travis Dye’s backup midway through. With Dye and CJ Verdell both gone now, he has immediately taken on a larger role in Oregon’s running back room.

“This spring has been really huge for both those guys,” Lanning said. “They’re getting an opportunity to go out there and compete. I think we knew what they had from a talent standpoint before, but hadn’t had the chance to see them really open up at this level.
“So, they’re seeing more snaps, a lot more carries, a lot more touches this spring than maybe they did in the past and it’s been exciting to see what they can do with those.”
