STORYLINES TO WATCH
Opposite directions
Purdue and Indiana each enter this contest on long streaks, but in very different ways. For Purdue, it’s lost nine straight games after a 2-0 start. It will need a major upset in this game to snap a 17-game Big Ten losing streak and avoid becoming just the second Big Ten program in the last 40 years to post consecutive winless conference seasons.
Meanwhile, in Bloomington, the Hoosiers enter with an 11-0 record for the first time in school history. Ranked second in the country, Indiana appears locked into the College Football Playoff for the second straight season and can clinch a spot in the Big Ten Championship Game with a win against Purdue.
Quarterback controversy
Perhaps the biggest storyline from Purdue’s embarrassing defeat at Washington? The quarterback conundrum. Ryan Browne started once again, but Malachi Singleton took the vast majority of the snaps. Regardless of who takes the snaps for Purdue, it’s been a listless offense for the better part of Big Ten season. The Boilermakers average less than 16 points per game in conference play.

On a larger scale, questions remain about how Purdue will handle the quarterback position entering 2026. Both Browne and Singleton have multiple years of eligibility remaining, but it’s fair to question whether either looks poised to lead Purdue into a critical 2026 season. With one final data point remaining before decisions must be made, how will Purdue handle the quarterback position in this game?
The end of year one
Win or lose, Indiana will serve as the finale for Barry Odom’s debut season. Preseason oddsmakers set Purdue’s win total at 2.5 or 3.5, depending on the sportsbook, making this a significant game for some. Regardless of outcome, this will mark the lowest win total in a coach’s debut season at Purdue since Darrell Hazell’s 1-11 campaign in 2013. Should Purdue fall to Indiana, Odom will join Hazell as the two Boilermaker bosses to win fewer than three games in their first year since Elmer Burnham in 1942.
