Texas linebacker DeMarvion Overshown was booked on Monday in Van Zandt County on charges of possession of less than two ounces of marijuana, Van Zandt County jail officials confirmed to Inside Texas.

Overshown paid a fine and was released, Van Zandt County jail officials told Inside Texas.

A Texas spokesperson described the citation as from an incident from “a year ago” and said it was Overshown returning to Van Zandt County to complete paperwork. Sarkisian’s press conference was held prior to the news breaking on Monday.

According to the Austin American-Statesman, Overshown was punished internally “months ago.”

Van Zandt County is on the east side of Tyler, about 60 miles from Overshown’s hometown of Arp.

A fifth-year senior, Overshown recorded 10 tackles in Texas’ win over the UTSA Roadrunners, but was ejected for targeting in the early stages of the fourth quarter. Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian said Monday they appealed the call that would suspend Overshown for the first half of the Longhorns’ upcoming matchup with Texas Tech, but had not yet heard from the NCAA.

When speaking, Sarkisian reiterated he had faith in the linebacker unit if it had to play without Overshown due to the targeting suspension. He specifically mentioned Jaylan Ford, who had 15 tackles, including 0.5 for loss, against UTSA on Saturday.

“Jaylan, to me, he’s got a high football IQ,” Sarkisian said. “He’s athletic. He’s physical. He has a high football IQ. He’s around the football a lot. You don’t come out of the game with 15 tackles not having some awareness, not having the ability to get around the ball.”

He also expressed faith in James Madison transfer Diamonte Tucker-Dorsey, who finished Saturday’s contest with three tackles, 1.5 TFL, a sack, and a forced fumble.

“We’ve got a great deal of confidence in Tucker-Dorsey,” Sarkisian said. “This guy has played a ton of football. He stepped in Saturday and played quite a bit Saturday, regardless. He stepped in Saturday and played really good for us. We’ll be okay.”

Other options at the linebacker position include David Gbenda and Jett Bush.

This is a developing story and will be updated. This story was updated Monday afternoon to reflect the timeline of events and the reason for Overshown’s Monday booking in Van Zandt county.
