With the news of a late week commitment from North Shore’s Sedrick Flowers, the Texas Longhorns’ 2011 offensive line haul couldn’t get much better, but it did in a big way on Saturday. Klein Collins offensive lineman Garrett Greenlea, currently rated as the top offensive tackle prospect in the state of Texas, was offered at Texas’ Junior Day and gave the Longhorns their 17th verbal commitment for the class of 2011.
The 6-foot-7, 290-pound Greenlea, the No. 16 ranked prospect in the Inside Texas 2011 Top 100, was one of two offensive linemen offered by the Longhorns on Saturday along with Aztec (N.M.) ESPNU 150 Watch List member Matt Hegarty. A prospect who said he grew up watching the Longhorns, the chance to play for Texas was too great of an opportunity for Greenlea to not take when it was presented to him. “It’s the right place for me. I know I made the right decision,” Greenlea told the Austin American-Statesman. “The coaches were awesome, the players were cool. Everyone was so welcoming.” Greenlea is now the fifth offensive lineman to commit to the Longhorns in the 2011 class joining Flowers, Hallsville’s Josh Cochran, Lake Travis’ Taylor Doyle and DeSoto’s Marcus Hutchins. Flowers and Hutchins will likely step on campus as guards and Doyle could play a number of positions while Cochran now Greenlea are destined for tackle. A unique blend of size, quickness and strength, Greenlea has shown he is not afraid to mix it up and be a violent, nasty blocker at the point of attack. Despite having a long frame, he displays tremendous knee bend and does an outstanding job of finishing plays. Greenlea recently told Inside Texas what goes into his mentality along the offensive line and why it produces tremendous results. “With me, I’m going to do whatever I have to do to get my assignment done and whether I have to knock the guy down in front of me to do it, then that’s what I’ll do,” Greenlea said. “I don’t take plays off. I play with an awesome offensive line and that’s our mentality.” Greenlea was recently offered by Notre Dame and was offered by Oklahoma and Nebraska among many other schools has he pulled in 15 offers prior to visiting Texas. Greenlea is one of two Junior Day pledges for Texas along with Carthage linebacker Kendall Thompson. It was offer No. 16 however that Greenlea pounced on as he gets ready for his career as a Longhorn.
