The near 6-foot-3, 220-pound EDGE prospect was named the Dallas Morning News Defensive Player of the Week after posting 12 tackles, six tackles for loss, five sacks and an interception return for a touchdown.

Walton’s otherworldly game didn’t come out of nowhere either. He posted 12 tackles and three sacks September 10 in a loss to a very talented DeSoto team. Through six games, Walton has amassed 55 tackles, 19 tackles for loss and nine sacks.

He’s now raced past the expectations those around the South Oak Cliff program had for him.

Walton has become more than an athlete with pads on

The South Oak Cliff coaching staff has seen a very important transformation in Walton with this season being the culmination.

“Initially, I though Billy was a really good athlete,” Said South Oak Cliff defensive coordinator Kyle Ward on Monday. “But I didn’t see the physicality needed before last season. He embraces contact now, so it’s very, very different.”

That embracing of contact has taken Walton’s game to a totally different level, and he’s proving to be a consistent, productive player.

“He’s playing at a high level now,” Ward said. “Teams are scheming him up now, but he’s playing through contact, so that makes it tough with his athleticism. He had three sacks against DeSoto, so this isn’t a one game thing. He’s shocked me, I’m not going to lie to you.”

Walton is currently a three-star in the On3 Consensus ranking. He’s one of 21 commitments in the Texas Longhorns No. 5 ranked recruiting class, which includes nine commitment from the DFW Metroplex.
