Maligi will head to Kansas State with the title of associate head coach. That title and more duties within the program will provide a platform to become a division I head coach in the near future.

The 37-year old Maligi came to Texas with Chris Beard after serving as an assistant for two years prior at Texas Tech.

Maligi came to the Texas program with 14 years of coaching experience, and had earned the reputation as a top-notch recruiter with deep ties to the Dallas/Fort Worth area. He began his coaching career at UT-Arlington in 2006-07. He moved on to Stephen F. Austin from 2007-10 before heading to Houston from 2010-12. After three seasons at SMU from 2012-15, Maligi made the jump to high-major basketball with Texas A&M from 2016-19.

Maligi’s recruiting at Texas

Maligi was a key cog in the recruitment of On3 Consensus five-star forward Dillon Mitchell. Maligi made waves on Inside Texas and across Longhorn Nation for going skydiving to help secure Mitchell’s commitment.

Maligi also played a role in the recruitment of On3 Consensus five-star combo guard Arterio Morris. Jerrance Howard was the primary recruiter with Maligi in the secondary role.

Four key members of Chris Beard’s staff remain

Four key members of Chris Beard’s first staff in Austin remain. Associate head coach Rodney Terry was instrumental in the defensive game planning all season. Managing director Chris Ogden played at Texas, coached with Chris Beard in Lubbock, and has been key in uniting the Texas family. Special assistant to the head coach Bob Donewald Jr. is heavily involved in the offense and player development. Assistant coach Jerrance Howard, like Maligi, is recognized as a top-notch recruiter from his time under bill Self at Kansas.

Men’s basketball strength and conditioning coach John Reilly is another huge part of the program that remains on staff. He is key in setting the daily culture of Beard’s program.
