‘Dores In The Summer League

With it being at the very worst part of the sports year (sorry baseball fans), there isn’t much to update on Vanderbilt basketball sadly. I will say that my reports out of basketball summer practice are very positive.

Some former Commodores have found their way into playing in the NBA Summer League and I am here to give you and update on some familiar faces. For those of you unfamiliar with Summer League, imagine an AAU tournament for the young guys trying to get their shot into the league, and rookies/sophomores getting extra reps in.

We will start with Chris Mañon, a player we only had the pleasure of having for one season but Chris was such an important part of that basketball team last year. He went undrafted this year but has found himself on the Golden State Warriors’ Summer League roster. Mañon has brought his style of high energy basketball to the NBA, and it’s showing up on the stat sheet.

In 5 games played, Chris is averaging 11 points per game on 50% shooting from both 2 and 3. Just like his college days, points are not the only way Chris shows up in the stat sheet, grabbing 5 rebounds per game and dishing out 2 assists per game. Defensively he is flying all over the court averaging a little more than 1 steal and 1 block per game. The best game of his summer league was against the Raptor, where he exploded for 17 points!

Next up is last years point guard, AJ Hoggard, another player we only had for a year in Nashville. Hoggard also went undrafted in this years draft but signed afterwards with the Pelicans for their Summer League team. Unfortunately, AJ didn’t perform to the level of his teammate Mañon, only averaging 2 ppg on 28% shooting and 0 for 1 from begin the arc. He did manage to average almost 2 rebounds per game and 0.3 assists per game. Hoggard’s best performance was against the Thunder, where he had 3 points.

Lastly we go to a player from a couple years ago, Liam Robbins. Robbins had an injury plagued career for Vandy but when healthy was a legitimate threat from anywhere on the court. Liam played last season with the Milwaukee Bucks but has found his way to the Washington Wizards Summer League squad. Robbins, like Hoggard, did not have the prettiest stats from Summer League, averaging 2.2 points on 22% shooting. He brought in 2.2 rebounds as well and 1 assist per game. Liam’s best outing was against the Sixers, where he tallied 8 points
