Michigan State and the new Spartan staff led by Jonathan Smith continue to add to their 2024 recruiting class, ahead of the upcoming late signing period (Feb. 7). The Spartans received a commitment from 2024 wide receiver Jaylan Brown, of Nacogdoches (Tex.) High School on Jan. 28.

Brown tells SpartanMag.com he first began hearing from the Spartans back on Jan. 12, as general manager Cole Moore initiated the contact. Spartan wide receivers coach Courtney Hawkins extended an offer to Brown on Jan. 17, as Hawkins and Michigan State running backs coach Keith Bhonapha stopped at his high school.

“I really like him,” Brown said of Hawkins “I can already tell he’s a fun guy to be around and I can truly see him developing me into not just an athlete but as a man as well. I have much love towards Coach Hawk. He told me that they loved my film and the upside that I have.”

The 6-foot-4, 185-pound receiver is not yet ranked in the 2025 On3 Industry Rankings. He holds two other offers from Washington State and North Texas. During his senior season on the football field, Brown nabbed 55 receptions for 910 yards and 11 touchdowns.

On the basketball court, Brown holds one offer from North American University. He is currently in the middle of his senior season and will enroll in East Lansing in the spring.

Brown committed to Michigan State after an official visit to East Lansing over the weekend (Jan. 26-28). It was his first trip to East Lansing, and the first official visit of his recruiting process.

Michigan State signed four-star wide receiver Nick Marsh of Detroit (MI) River Rouge High School during the early signing period, the highest ranked commitment in the Spartan 2024 class. Hawkins and the new Spartan staff also made a quick evaluation landing and signing speedy receiver Austin Clay, of Berea (OH) Midpark High School. Brown will be the third receiver to sign with the Spartans in the 2024 class.
