River Rouge, Mich. Michigan State landed a massive re-commitment on Friday when River Rouge (Mich.) High School four-star wide receiver Nick Marsh chose the Spartans over 37 other offers. Marsh is now the top-rated prospect in the Spartans’ 2024 class.

The 6-foot-3, 198-pound wide receiver had offers from every Power Five conference, including finalists Kansas, Penn State, Pittsburgh and Oregon. Marsh took official visits to Pittsburgh (June 2), Penn State (June 9), Kansas (June 16) and Michigan State (June 23) last month. Auburn and Oregon were involved as well, but Marsh did not take an official visit to either school.

Marsh committed to Michigan State following last year’s Spartan Dawg Con on July 31, 2022. He held that commitment for nearly a year, but decided to reopen his recruitment on March 7.

Michigan State never lost hope it could swing the River Rouge standout back to East Lansing, and the staff’s efforts paid off Friday. Auburn and Oregon, as well as the Spartans’ in-state rival, Michigan, were talked about as potential landing spots for Marsh when he first decommited from Michigan State.

But as Marsh scheduled his summer official visits, Penn State emerged as the team to beat for Marsh’s services.

In early June, On3 Director of Scouting Chad Simmons and other On3 staffers placed a prediction in favor of the Nittany Lions. That momentum shifted back into Michigan State’s favor, though, the week following Marsh’s official visit to East Lansing.

Spartan wide receivers coach Courtney Hawkins sold Marsh on the Spartans’ family atmosphere and loyalty. Along with their ability to get wide receivers into the league.

Multiple Michigan State wide receivers have been picked in the NFL Draft over the past two seasons. Jalen Nailor went in the sixth round to the Minnesota Vikings in 2022. Jayden Reed went in the second round to the Green Bay Packers in 2023.

Both Nailor and Reed were three star recruits coming out of high school. Former Spartan receiver Keon Coleman is projected to go in the top three rounds of next year’s draft. Coleman credited Hawkins with helping him refine his route-running ability and capitalize on his athletic gifts in two seasons at Michigan State.

Marsh is the 12th member of the Spartans’ 2024 class. As it stands, he is the third highest-rated prospect of the Mel Tucker era. Marsh ranks just behind 2023 EDGE prospects Bai Jobe and Andrew Depaepe. Marsh is also Michigan State’s highest-rated receiver commit since 2016.
