Michigan State received a commitment from class of 2024 speedy wide receiver Austin Clay of Berea (OH) Midpark High School on Dec. 18. Clay committed to the Spartans via social media after a weekend official visit. It was his first visit to East Lansing.

The 6-foot, 175-pounder has been committed to Bowling Green since late June of 2023. He committed to Bowling Green over offers from Navy, Fordham, Massachusetts, Ball State, Akron, and Pennsylvania. Michigan State came through with the first Power Five offer for Clay on Dec. 11.

The offer was extended by Spartan wide receivers coach Courtney Hawkins, who was retained under new Michigan State head coach Jonathan Smith. Smith and company have placed an emphasis on Midwest recruiting upon arrival in East Lansing. The offer to Clay was a result of a strong senior season from the Midpark High School product.

The three-star receiver had 49 receptions for 739 yards and seven touchdowns, along with 913 yards in the return game and three more touchdowns. Clay is now in the midst of basketball season, setting a school single game record with 10 steals in game on Dec. 7. Due to basketball season, Clay will not graduate from high school and enroll with Michigan State until the spring of 2024.

Clay ranks third in school history in all time steals with 97. He is also second in school history with 173 career assists. He will look to continue to rise up the record books during his senior season.

He is ranked the No. 1643 overall recruit in the 2024 On3 Industry Rankings. Clay is also ranked the No. 70 recruit in Ohio and the No. 220 wide receiver.

Michigan State and Hawkins will pair clay with four-star wide receiver Nick Marsh in the Spartan 2024 class. Marsh is a do-it-all receiver, showing plus speed and elite high pointing ability during his own senior season. Michigan State now holds 13 commitments in the class of 2024, as Clay becomes the third commitment, so far, to come out of the Dec. 15-17 official visit weekend.

Michigan State is in good position to get at least two more commitments today and two more on Tuesday.
