In this week’s board chat members on the Crimson Corner had a lot of talk about the future in the SEC. From what things could look like for the Sooners in 2024 to when Oklahoma might really be on track in their new conference. We take a look at all of it in this week’s Board Chat as members ask our Josh McCuistion anything they can think of.

What Changes under Sooners New Co-DC Zac Alley?

The level of recruiting ability I figure to be different. Zac Alley may not have the long-standing relationships, but I’ve not been convinced those were bringing OU much anyway. I’ve seen Ted Roof on the road and while he was present it often felt like he was just kind of putting in a ‘make sure a player sees me’ and then goes on.

When I compare that to (Miguel) Chavis or (Todd) Bates who the kids engage with (even when they can’t do much more then give each other a head nod)…it’s just different.

I think with Alley you get a guy who is fully bought into Brent’s system and seems to have Brent’s trust. He’s also a guy who has worked a lot with other Sooners staff members, there’s a lot of connectivity.

‘How Would you Rank the SEC Head Coaches’

It should be noted that my response to the question was largely based on two factors, A) What has been done not a projection of what will be. B) A coach’s career as a head coach rather than a debate of their accolades prior.

1. Smart – UGA
2. Kelly – LSU
3. DeBoer – Bama
4. Kiffin – Ole Miss
5. Sarkisian – Texas
6. Freeze – Auburn
7. Stoops – Kentucky
8. Heupel – Tennessee
9. A&M – Elko
10. Drinkwitz – Missouri
11. Venables – Oklahoma
12. Beamer – So. Car.
13. Napier – Florida
14. Lea – Vandy
15. Lebby – MSU
16. Pittman – Arkansas

And yes, I expect that answer to draw lots of rave reviews.

Nick Saban the Commissioner of College Football?

I can’t stamp it fast enough, he’s got enough respect from players and coaches to actually get things done and has the ideas to put things in place when needed. He’s also amazingly forward-thinking. My guess on the first thing he’d do?

My first two things to do…

“They are employees, now let’s bargain and rosters can settle down.”

“Coaches, like in the NFL, can’t just be bought from one team to the next (maybe make a stipulation that divides P5/G5) they will have to be traded.”

For example?

“OK, Alabama, you want Kalen DeBoer who is still under contract for 3 years? You give us 3 of your scholarships for 3 years. Washington – 88, Alabama – 82 until 2027.”

It would minimize the buyout craze, would limit coaches jumping all around all the time, and might even quite the portal BECAUSE of less jumping.

It’s not a perfect idea and needs some workshopping but I really like that one.
