In our weekly board chat we take stock of anything and everything that Sooners fans might want to talk about. Though Oklahoma has flown a bit under the radar over the past few months, there’s still pleny to discuss. From the more 100 foot opinions of what the NFL draft might look like for a few of Oklahoma’s biggest stars to a broader view of the future of the NCAA calendar.

Also, some talk of one of the hot topics around the Sooners at the moment – offensive line evaluation and recruiting.

What Does The NFL Draft Future Look like for Sooners Danny Stutsman and Billy Bowman?

I’d guess both Sooners stars are late second round picks or early third.

To me, if anyone still has room to climb it is probably Danny. The three-year Oklahoma starter is a bit more prototypical with his frame and I think will test a little more above average from his peers than Bowman.

Bowman’s instincts are what make him so, so special.

What changes Need to be Made to the NCAA Calendar?

I want to do a full story on this but to me the basic outline is this…

Early signing period in maybe late July/early August – have it right before the start of team camp. Then another one in February. The only way the portal window can work is in December but early national signing day (if you feel compelled to have one, which I think is a good idea) you can move around a bit.

I also like it because you’re also expanding the CFB calendar into importance at new times of the year. As such you’re increasing your engagement and presence.

How Much Stock Should We Put in the Sooners 2024 OL Rankings?

Oh I don’t think there’s any position in the sport where rankings should mean less to fans, Sooners or otherwise, than on the OL.

I mean look at this year’s NFL all pro team:

Trent Williams – 3-star
Joel Bitonio – UR
Tyler Smith – 3-star
Jason Kelce – UR
Zack Martin – 4-star
Lane Johnson – UR

Avg Ranking: 1.66-stars

And I’m not even faulting a lot of those rankings, Kelce was a running back/linebacker and Johnson was a quarterback, who is going to project those guys to be future hall of famers?

Again, I think each year the evaluation process gets more eyes, more streamlined, and a lot better than it was even 10 years ago. But, even very good OL coaches have some awful misses both in who they took and who they didn’t.
