Oregon LB Devon Jackson Opens up on Return from Injury

The Ducks will return a couple of linebackers this season that will be heavily relied upon. One of the faster players on defense is linebacker Devon Jackson. And his role this season will be a key leader on the defensive side of the ball.
Jackson has been dinged up headed into Fall camp. But he was able to return to work Dan Lanning confirmed after Saturday’s scrimmage. On Monday Jackson met with media to talk about his return and the linebacker unit. You can read most of his interview below.
On Making his Return:
“Well, good thing we have a good relationship with all the guys in the room. So like the guys around me, literally from everybody, from Bryce, even the younger guys, Kamar, Dylan, Braden, like everybody in the room was like, bro, you’re going to be good. And just watching film with them, like we do things together, watch film together. So it’s not like – I never really felt like I was out. But, I was still mentally sharp doing what I do. That’s why, when I am full go I didn’t really miss a beat because I was still locked in and still on the team.”
On Becoming a Leader:
“I just, the guys got to know that I still, I’m here for them and just building those off-field connections, right? The process might’ve been different for me throughout this year, but to still build those relationships with those guys, with everybody on the team, the whole defense, and not just the defense, the offense, like the whole team, you know, where I’m still here for y’all.”

On the Redshirt Freshmen LB’ers:
“It’s been great for them, just for them to get more comfortable within the system and then have, you know, me and Bryce guide them. But also there are different parts of your game that they do better than what we do and just lean to that and then take pieces of everybody’s game. And that’s advice I try to give them. I’ve been here long enough. I was around Noah Sewell and Jamal Hill and obviously (Jeff) Bassa. Take pieces of part of their game and then make it to my own and try to tell them to do the same, watch as much film as other players as you can and learn from us as much as possible. And we are always going to be a resource, but they coming along great and I can’t wait for them to show what they can do.”
On Tobi Haastrup:
“Yeah, freak of nature. Dude, I thought he was a transfer at first, to be honest with you. I’m like, why are you bigger than me and you’re 12 years old? That’s crazy, but definitely, you know, freak of freaking nature and I can’t wait for him to put it together. But just a message to him, just like any other young guy, just stick to your process and you’ll be all right.”
