Mr. Texas Football annually recognizes the most outstanding high school football player in the state of Texas.

Johntay Cook, WR, Desoto (Texas)

In three years, the On3 four-star has put together an impressive resume. He’s tallied 2,773 yards receiving and 48 touchdowns on 153 catches, good for 18.1 yards per catch. Cook and his DeSoto Eagles (11-2) are still in the Texas high school playoffs. They’ll face Harker Heights (12-1) and fellow Texas commit Jaydon Chatman in an upcoming matchup. Cook plans on enrolling at Texas in January.

Malik Muhammad, CB, Dallas (Texas) South Oak Cliff

One of the top ranked defensive backs in the nation, Muhammad cemented himself as a premier corner prospect with a fantastic senior year. In three seasons of varsity ball, On3’s No. 4 cornerback in the country has notched 138 total tackles (93 solo), four interceptions, one QB hurry, and one forced fumble, plus a state championship. The Golden Bears (10-3) are taking on Melissa (11-2) and Texas pledge Trevor Goosby in the playoffs on Friday.

Colton Vasek, EDGE, Austin (Texas) Westlake

The former Oklahoma pledge flipped to the Longhorns last month and will continue the Westlake-to-Texas pipeline. He’ll join the likes of Sam Ehlinger and Breckyn Hager, plus current Horns Michael Taaffe, Ethan Burke, and Connor Robertson. Vasek has had a solid career at Westlake, with 115 tackles (81 solo), 24 sacks, three forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery. The Chaparrals (13-0) are the three-time defending state champions and face San Antonio Brennan (12-1) on Saturday.

Texas running back Jonathon Brooks won the award in 2020.

The Mr. Texas Football Semifinalists for 2022 include Austin Novosad, Jackson Arnold, Dalton Brooks, Owen Allen, Re’shaun Sanford, Reuben Owens, Dre’lon Miller, Peyton Bowen, and Terry Bussey.

Previous recipients of the award include 2018 Heisman Trophy winner and No. 1 overall pick QB Kyler Murray (2013 and 2014, Allen), 2012 Heisman Trophy winner QB Johnny Manziel (2010, Kerrville Tivy), former Texas Longhorns RB Johnathan Gray (2011, Aledo), former Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Jacquizz Rodgers (2007, Lamar Consolidated), current Oklahoma State QB Spencer Sanders (2017, Denton Ryan) and former Dallas Cowboys QB Garrett Gilbert (2008, Lake Travis). Former China Spring quarterback and current Lamar University RB Major Bowden took home the award in 2021.

In December, 10 finalists will be announced and fans can then cast their votes as to who should be named Mr. Texas Football. The winner of the 2022 Mr. Texas Football Award presented by Kroger will be announced prior to the TaxAct Texas Bowl, which will be played at NRG Stadium on December 28, 2022.
