Aggies move up in key national rankings
After a 7-sack, 11 tackle for loss performance against LSU last night, the Texas A&M defense now leads the nation in average sacks per game at 4.0. Fourteen different Aggies have at least half a sack. A&M is also fourth in the nation in average tackles for loss per game at 8.3. On the other side of the ball, Texas A&M is now ranked first nationally in fewest tackles for loss allowed per game.
The Aggies are now ranked 30th in total defense, 21st in total offense and 14th in scoring offense. Their streak of four straight road games with 40 points or more (Auburn last year, Notre Dame, Arkansas and LSU this year) ties an SEC record.
A&M remains steady in the polls, but…
Texas A&M remains third in the nation in both the AP and Coaches Polls this week, but the Aggies did something new this week — received first place votes. A&M received the only two first place votes that did not go to Ohio State in the Coaches Poll, and picked up a single first place vote in the AP poll. The Aggies trail the Buckeyes and Indiana in both polls.
Basketball dumps Arizona State 95-88 in Sunday exhibition
Bucky McMillan’s tenure as Texas A&M’s basketball coach got off to a successful, if unofficial, start Sunday night with a 95-88 win over Arizona State at the Fort Bend EpiCenter in Rosenberg.
The leading scorer on the night was one of the more overlooked additions through the transfer portal, former Kansas big man Zach Clemence. Clemence, who was picked up by A&M due to his ability to shoot from long distance, drained five 3-pointers en route to a 20-point performance. One of those 3’s sparked a 12-2 run with nine minutes to go in the game to put the Aggies up 78-71.
Arizona State regained the lead with a 9-0 run, but a 3-pointer by Rice transfer Ali Dibba and another 3 from Clemence capped an 8-0 Aggie run to put A&M up 86-80, and they held onto the lead from there.
Fellow Kansas transfer Rylan Griffen scored 16 points, while USC transfer and team captain Rashaun Agee added 8 points and 8 rebounds. Josh Holloway, who followed McMillan from Samford, had 9 assists while former Texas Tech forward Federiko Federiko added 11 points.
For the game, A&M was 13 of 29 from 3-point range, or just under 45%.
Volleyball takes two more SEC matches on the road
The No. 9 Texas A&M volleyball team ran its winning streak to five matches over the weekend, dumping LSU 3-1 Friday before heading to Oxford to sweep the Rebels 3-0.
The Aggies (17-3, 9-1 SEC) dropped their first set of the weekend against the Tigers before rebounding to win the next three and the match (22-25, 25-14, 25-22, 25-23). Logan Lednicky led the Aggies with 14 kills and added 12 digs, while Maddie Waak had 41 assists. Ifenna Cos-Okpalla had a team-high 4 aces and 7 blocks.
Ole Miss would be a less challenging opponent, with the Aggies taking care of the Rebels (25-23, 25-23, 25-14). Waak had 45 assists in the match, the fourth-highest total in program history. Lednicky led the team with 16 kills and added a pair of aces in the win.
The Aggies will play Texas Friday night at Reed Arena in a matchup of top-10 teams. First serve is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
Aggies in the NFL
Cleveland Browns DE Myles Garrett had a game that added to his legend in a game that he would otherwise rather forget. Garrett had a franchise record 5 sacks against New England, pushing his total to 10 for the season. Ins pite of Garrett’s remarkable effort, the Patriots still blew out the Browns 32-13.
Aggie football great Aaron Glenn got his first win as a head coach Sunday as the New York Jets survived a shootout with the Cincinnati Bengals, 39-38. Defensive end Micheal Clemons added a tackle and a QB hit for the Jets, while Shemar Stewart registered a tackle for the Bengals.
Miami Dolphins RB Devon Achane had 91 yards of total offense and a touchdown reception while LB Tyrel Dodson tallied 5 tackles as the Dolphins cruised past the Atlanta Falcons 34-10.
Carolina Panthers DE Nic Scourton had 5 tackles and half a sack while defensive tackle Bobby Brown III added 2 tackles in a 40-9 loss to the Buffalo Bills.
Philadelphia Eagles P Braden Mann only had to punt once Sunday, but he made it count with a 57-yarder as the Eagles hammered the New York Giants 38-20.
Indianapolis Colts LB Buddy Johnson had 3 tackles, including a tackle for loss, as the Colts blasted the Tennessee Titans 38-14.
Green Bay Packers LB Edgerrin Cooper had 5 tackles as the Packers rallied to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 35-25.
