West Virginia is set to take on Ohio, and we examine players on the Bobcats roster that were once on the recruiting radar for the Mountaineers.

Chase Hendricks, WR

Hendricks earned an offer from West Virginia when former safeties coach Dontae Wright pulled the trigger in February of 2022. From that point, a number of other schools got involved but things never seemed to get much further with the Mountaineers. Hendricks would commit to Ohio at the end of January in 2023 and appeared in 27 games over his first two years with 578 yards and a score. Hendricks hauled in 9 passes for 115 yards in the season opener against Rutgers.

Rickey Hyatt, S

Hyatt received an offer from West Virginia in Feb. 2019 and proceeded to add a long list of other Power Four scholarship offers. The Mountaineers didn’t make the cut for his top six, though in June with Ohio State, Michigan State, North Carolina, Kentucky, and Cincinnati making up the list. Hyatt would eventually commit to Kentucky and spent two years there before moving on to South Alabama for two seasons and now at Ohio. He is listed as the backup safety.

JT Haskins, S

Haskins earned an offer from West Virginia under the former coaching staff from head coach Neal Brown and secondary coach ShaDon Brown in January 2023. He then took an unofficial visit to campus in March. From that point, the Mountaineers weren’t really a major factor for whatever reason and he would commit to Ohio in December that year. He’s recorded five tackles across seven games in his first two years with the Bobcats.

DJ Walker, S

Walker was from nearby Aliquippa and took an unofficial visit to West Virginia in March of 2022, but things never progressed to the point where the Mountaineers extended an offer under the previous coaching staff. A talented athlete, Walker collected a long list of offers and would eventually commit to Ohio in February of 2023. Walker started every game in 2024 for the Bobcats with 53 tackles and an interception and started this year with 6 tackles in the season opener.

Tony Mathis, CB

Mathis was a target of the former West Virginia coaching staff, and he took a visit to campus on April 22 in order to see what the Mountaineers had to offer. But things never really went much further than that, and he would end up committing to Ohio in September of 2023. He appeared in seven games in 2024 and recorded a total of seven tackles.
