So much for simply getting his feet wet. Maxwell Hairston has made a cannonball splash into the NFL in the first two games of his professional career. Last week in his debut, Hairston showed incredible poise and talent, but he took that up a notch against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 10. Hairston came up with a massive, game-clinching interception late in the 4th quarter at the expense of Patrick Mahomes. Maybe you’ve heard of him.

Even cooler, Mad Max went all Babe Ruth and called his shot. Ahead of the game, he said, “Just [having] the opportunity to pick off Patrick Mahomes, that’s all I’m looking forward to.”

And he did. He picked off the multiple-time Super Bowl champ in one of the biggest games of the regular season at one of the biggest spots in the game with the Chiefs down a touchdown, driving to tie the game with four minutes remaining in the 4th quarter.

It wasn’t just that play where Hairston shone. He locked up Xavier Worthy, arguably the fastest wide receiver in the league, going step for step with him on a deep route. Aside from matching speed, Hairston studied Worthy’s film extensively and, like a good poker player, picked up on his tells.

Hairston shared, “Finding a difference in his posture and his effort for real — when he knows he’s not getting it, when it’s a run. So, just applying what I saw from the film room and taking it out to the field. There are tells that everybody gives. It’s just about finding it.”

In total, Hairston had 33 coverage snaps, was targeted four times, and allowed just one reception for 18 yards. He also led the Bills in defensive grade. The future is bright for the former Kentucky Wildcat.

Josh Hines-Allen ties Jacksonville Jaguars franchise sack record

Josh Hines-Allen nearly leads the league in QB pressures, but has not had many sacks to show for it. That changed in Week 9, as the man formally known simply as Josh Allen sacked Las Vegas Raiders’ quarterback, Geno Smith, twice on the night. Okay, technically, 1.5 times to bring his career total up to 55.0

This ties the Jaguars franchise record set by Tony Brackens, a record Allen will most certainly claim for himself in the next game or two. On the accomplishment, he said, “More importantly [than tying the record], we got the win. That tops everything off. But I tied the record. Getting closer to breaking it. We got Houston next week.”

In the immediate aftermath of his team’s overtime victory, Josh went into the stands to celebrate with visiting Jaguars fans. You can tell he loves that franchise. In the immortal words of head coach Liam Coen, “DUUUUVAAAALLL!”

Chris Rodriguez Jr. leads Washington in rushing, scores another touchdown

Chris Rodriguez Jr. took to prime time Sunday Night Football to put on his best performance of the season for the Washington Commanders, albeit in a blowout loss. C-Rod carried the ball 12 times for 65 yards, both season highs. He also bulldozed his way into the endzone from four yards out to secure his second touchdown of the season.

Rodriguez’s roller coaster year continues to hit high highs and low lows. He scored his first touchdown of the year in Week 7, then got only 1 carry in Week 8, and now notched 12 totes and a tuddy in Week 9. A search for his name on X and you will see several Washington fans clamoring for him to get the ball more, calling out how much more explosive he has been than the team’s shiny new rookie, Jacory Croskey-Merritt.

Despite all the noise and frustration surrounding the Commanders’ running back depth chart, C-Rod simply keeps his head down, keeps working, and, like always, keeps falling forward.

Other BBNFL Notes

  • Wan’Dale Robinson had a season-high nine receptions on 10 targets in the New York Giants’ loss to the San Fransciso 49ers. His multitude of catches only totaled 46 yards, though, as the Giants’ offensive coordinator insists on keeping Robinson’s routes short. On behalf of BBN, unleash Wan’Dale downfield more often! More than anything, Robinson is tired of losing. After the game, he bluntly said, “I hate this s—.”
  • Brandin Echols has a knack for big plays. Not only did he get the start and play 57 snaps on defense, he also contributed on special teams, where he recovered a muffed punt to give the Steelers excellent field position. If NFL rules allowed for punt recoveries to be returned, it would have been a touchdown. It was a key play in the Steelers’ win.
  • For the second straight week, Luke Fortner served as the starting center for the New Orleans Saints. He logged all 41 offensive snaps for the team and finished as the top-graded pass blocker. The Saints lost to the Rams, but they may have finally settled in on their permanent center.
