2024 Honolulu (Hawaii) St. Louis School three-star offensive tackle Rustin Young signed with Michigan State on Wednesday. The 6-foot-5, 255-pound Young committed to Michigan State on Tuesday, following his official visit to East Lansing during the weekend of Dec. 15.

Young initially committed to Jonathan Smith and his staff at Oregon State, but re-opened his recruitment following Smith’s move to Michigan State. Young visited Arizona State the weekend of Dec. 8 before choosing to stay loyal to Smith’s staff by committing to the Spartans. He chose Michigan State over offers from Arizona State, Auburn, San Diego State and Utah, among others.

Young is the No. 713 prospect, No. 45 offensive tackle and No. 3 player from Hawaii, per the On3 Industry Rankings. He is one of two Hawaiian prospects to commit to Michigan State’s 2024 class, joining three-star EDGE Kekai Burnett.

Young is an underrated get for new Michigan State offensive line coach Jim Michalczik. Two of the four major recruiting services rank Young as a four-star recruit.

Scouting summary

Young – like most high school offensive linemen – will have to spend time filling out his frame at Michigan State. He displayed very strong hands as a high schooler and is a talented shot put and discus thrower in track and field.

Reminds us of

Certain offensive lineman don’t have to bulk up to compete at the highest level, thanks in part to their long arms or pure strength. Former Virginia Tech tackle Vinston Painter fit this mold. The Denver Broncos selected Painter in the sixth round of the 2013 NFL Draft. He played for six teams until 2017.

Personal life

Young was recently selected to play in both the Polynesian Bowl and the Under Armour All-American Bowl.
