Oklahoma City Heritage Hall quarterback Andy Bass simply wouldn’t be denied. He was never really on the Oklahoma radar, but Bass kept making an impression.

Eventually, he was just too good to pass up. And he’s staying home as Bass announced his commitment to the Sooners on Thursday morning at Heritage Hall.

OU beat out Syracuse and Kansas State in Bass’ final three, and he becomes the latest in-state commitment for head coach Brent Venables in the last two months.

Bass was earning nice offers during the spring, but he bet on himself to attend one of the on-campus events in June.

He showed up, showed out and instantly became a name to watch for a future offer. OU started to show some real interest, and it has felt like a countdown toward his commitment ever since.

Bass has legitimate 10.5-second speed in the 100. Easiest way to describe him is a jack-of-all-trades. He will continue to play quarterback for the Chargers, but his OU future? Could be anything from running back to wide receiver because he brings that versatility.

Bass completed 200 of 319 passes (63 percent) for 2,833 yards with 28 touchdowns and eight interceptions last season. He also rushed for 970 yards and 17 more scores.

Once OU was able to find a way to make the scholarship numbers work, Bass was a very easy decision. These are the types of guys Venables has done a great job of finding through the years. These are the types of guys Venables wants to continue to find for his team.

Bass was so good during that one session in Norman that he didn’t have to come back for the afternoon portion. His job was done, showing the coaches all they needed to see.

Bass has not been evaluated by On3’s recruiting rankings staff yet. He is a three-star prospect by Rivals and 247.

OU fans are hoping this is the start of a massive recruiting weekend. Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy five-star defensive lineman David Stone will announce Saturday night.

Originally from Del City, Okla., Sooner fans are hoping to land another big-time in-state prospect with Stone. That’s all Venables has been doing here lately. And that’s a good thing, and now it also officially includes Bass.
