It didn’t take long for new OU commitment Alexander Shieldnight to make an impression.

Shieldnight, a three-star prospect for the 2025 class, announced his commitment to the Sooners just hours before Wagoner (Okla.) High’s playoff game Friday evening.

Shieldnight announced at 5 p.m., but for those who didn’t know, a video was played on the Wagoner scoreboard prior to kickoff with Shieldnight picking the Sooners.

And then? Well, it was back to work. Shieldnight was dominant all night at defensive end and at tight end in Wagoner’s 57-7 victory against Broken Bow to begin the Class 4A playoffs.

Shieldnight got things started immediately with two big catches from his tight end spot, including a touchdown.

No jitters at all after making the call.

SoonerScoop video editor Eddie Radosevich was on hand to watch and talk with Shieldnight on Friday night.

“It was a no-brainer for me with Coach V and their staff,” said Shieldnight about picking OU.

Shieldnight has developed a tremendous relationship with OU head coach Brent Venables and defensive ends coach Miguel Chavis.

Chavis was down in Wagoner earlier this season to watch Shieldnight for a game.

“He’s taught me a lot on the field and off the field,” Shieldnight said. “That was definitely big for me, seeing Coach Chavis there.”

Shieldnight’s commitment continues OU’s incredible run within the state. He is the Sooners’ eighth commitment for the 2025 class. Six of them are among the top 10 OKPreps recruits for the class as Venables continues to make it a priority.

“It’s awesome,” Shieldnight said. “It’s great he’s recruiting the Oklahoma area. There’s a lot of talent here.”

Shieldnight said a key reason he wanted to commit to OU is because he wants to make sure he can be a mid-year enrollee for the 2025 class. Wrapping up his recruitment will allow the Wagoner administration to help him in that pursuit.

Because Shieldnight can’t wait to be in Norman with Venables and company.

“They know how to win,” he said. “They’ll continue to be real successful. I hope I can be a part of it all.”
