Dan Lanning Opens up about Fall Camp and Position Groups

On Monday Oregon held its annual media day in Eugene. While Dan Lanning kicked off the event, his interview did not stream. However he did join Joey Mac on Duck Insider immediately after his time at the podium.
Lanning opened up about media day, the ongoing construction and a look at his team by position group. It’s a lot of coach speak but here are the majority of his comments from the interview.
On if media day feels like first day of school:
“Walk through does, meetings do, media day not so much.”
Follow Up:
“What was the class you didn’t like? I don’t hate it. The part with the players is the part I enjoy.”
On the construction:
“It’s a little bit different as far as our practice regimen from our space and where we use. We’re a little more limited. We’re practicing in Autzen stadium and Mo center. A little more creative with how we use our space. But when it’s done it will be untouched, it will be unlike anything in the nation. It’s going to be an upgrade in a lot of categories for us.”
On Getting back to practice:
“I always love touching the grass, getting out there on the field with our guys. Getting to see the meeting room carry over to the practice field. We gotta figure out where we’re good, where we’re not. This guy had a good Summer, did it carry over to the field. All those things excite me.”
On Finally having his team:
“The first year you’re trying to cook a meal with pieces on the team you didn’t necessarily bring there. This year is the first time we had a roster we pieced together from top to bottom. Guys that we believed in. And now we’re going into our second year of that. I think we have two guys on the team that were here before we got here. Being able to see that, see it come together.”
On the QB Room:
“Good. I like our group. We’ve got guys that bring different dynamics. A lot of practice experience we’ve been able to see. I’ve got a lot of confidence in those guys.”
On the RB Room:
“Tons of talent. What are things we can do different with so many guys that can play above the line football.”
On the TE Room:
“He’s always been about his work. You’re seeing leadership traits take shape now. Feel good about the depth. Roger was down there so this Spring and Summer has been about getting him back. Adding Jamari (JJ) is a big piece too. A younger group but one I have a lot of faith in.”

On the WR Room:
“This is one we’ll see who steps up. We feel really good about the talent in the room. Some guys that are going to take advantage of what’s in front of them.”
On the OL Room:
“This group has a ton of talent. We had a great group last year. It’s a different room. We have some great players now and figure out how all five pieces fall together. How quickly can we get them caught up and ready to roll.”
On the DL Room:
“You look at our EDGE’s these guys have experience. You lose some guys inside, that’s where we’ll have to figure out early where we’re at in Fall camp.”
On the LB Room:
“Bryce and D-Jack had a lot of experience for us. D-Jack has been limited this Spring and Summer but he should be ready for us this Fall.”
On the DB Room:
“It’s going to be brand new faces across the board. Some guys with limited experience for us last season. But we have a longer, deeper group in that back end, I’m excited to see who steps up for us.”
On Special Teams:
“The cohesiveness of that unit. The way these guys work together.”
On a successful Fall camp:
“Growth, I’ve gotta see growth. You’d love to walk away healthy. There’s a level of play that has to be executed. A level of toughness we’ve made our signature.”
