Steve Sarkisian announces who will call the Texas defense versus Michigan
Steve Sarkisian replaced Pete Kwiatkowski with Will Muschamp on Thursday, bringing the former Texas defensive coordinator back to the 40 Acres. In addition, Sarkisian let go of Duane Akina, who was also in his second stint at Texas.
With Kwiatkowski no longer part of the program, who is going to call plays against Michigan? Sarkisian announced Friday that current linebackers coach and co-defensive coordinator Johnny Nansen will call plays.
Nansen, who was with Texas in 2024, was most recently a defensive coordinator at Arizona in 2023.
“Coach Muschamp will observe, but Coach Nansen will call the defense,” Sarkisian said. “I don’t think that’d be fair to Coach Muschamp to come in and call somebody else’s defense. We just don’t have quite enough time to get that thing installed.
“Coach Nansen will call it. He’s got a great staff around him with (LaAllan) Clark, (Kenny) Baker, (Mark) Orphey, and (Keynodo) Hudson.”

Texas is scheduled to take on the Michigan Wolverines in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl on Wednesday, December 31 at 2:00 p.m. ABC will televise the contest.
