What to watch for vs. UConn

No more keys to a win. BC just needs to stay competitive at this point.

After blowout losses to Pitt and Clemson, BC is technically favored by 2.5 points against Northeast ruval UConn this weekend, but even Bill O’Brien said he believes the Huskies should be favored this week with a better record than the Eagles.

UConn is no longer the UConn everyone thinks they still are. The Huskies are two wins away from a third bowl bid in four years under Jim Mora. They also have a legit No. 1 QB, running back and wide receiver.

QB1 Joe Fagnano could pose problems

Back in October of 2022, Fagnano was here as an opponent when Maine made things interesting on a bad-weather Friday night. BC won 38-17, but that night as the Black Bears’ QB, Fagnano was 21-43 for 289 yards with two touchdowns and two picks.

Now in his seventh year of college football, Fagnano has 1,556 yards, 11 touchdowns and zero interceptions. If BC is still banged up on defense – particularly in the secondary – Fagnano and this UConn offense could have plenty of success.

Cam Edwards is hard to stop once he gets going

If BC does find a way to slow down UConn’s offense (the Huskies have scored 30+ points in four games), then senior running back Cam Edwards could pick up some of the slack. Edwards has 637 yards on 101 carries with seven touchdowns. Seven players have at least one rushing touchdown for the Huskies this season. BC will need its linebackers and secondary to tackle well or it could be a long day trying to stop a physical UConn front.

Skyler Bell getting national attention for his hot start

Sky Bell should be BC’s biggest concern, especially if Amari Jackson is out.

Bell has 562 yards on 48 grabs with six touchdowns. Behind him, Reymello Murphy has 17 catches for 221 yards and three touchdowns. Only three other players have caught a touchdown so far, so the drop off is significant. The problem is, BC may not have anyone that can matchup with Bell on the outside.

Prediction: UConn 34, BC 31 (possibly OT)

It’s just been one of those years for the Eagles. BC basically has no choice but to win this game to keep the season from truly hitting rock bottom, even if Bill O’Brien does say ‘the sky isn’t falling’ inside the building. On the other hand, UConn is in a no-lose situation and beating BC for the second time in three years would only boost the program’s growing appeal for a new conference, while possibly giving them an edge in recruiting too.
