Florida Gators defensive lineman Michai Boireau, a key defender at UF, plans to enter the transfer portal. He posted the news on X.

Boireau, a sophomore from the metro-Atlanta area, started at nose tackle in all nine games he played in last season. He recorded 20 tackles and 2.0 sacks in 296 snaps. As a true freshman in 2024, Boireau competed in 144 snaps across 12 games played; he registered 15 tackles (seven solo).

The 6-foot-4.5, 349-pound Boireau was a 3-star recruit in high school, but chose the Gators over Georgia, among others.

Here are his game-by-game numbers in 2025, from his official UF bio:

  • vs. LIU: Logged a total of 15 snaps (11 on defense, 4 on special teams)… Totaled one tackle and registered a 75.9 defensive grade on Pro Football Focus (PFF).
  • vs. USF: Started and played a total of 44 snaps (39 on defense, 5 on special teams)… Racked up 5 total tackles.
  • vs. No. 9 Texas: Returned to action with a start logging 38 total snaps (33 on defense, 5 on special teams)… Made 2 tackles including his first sack of the season.

  • vs. Mississippi State: Started and played 33 snaps on defense with 4 on special teams… Recorded one tackle and the game sealing interception which led to a Florida win. This was the first interception by a UF defensive lineman since Gervon Dexter Sr. had one against Kentucky on 9/10/2022.
  • vs. No. 5 Georgia: Logged 38 snaps while starting on defense and 5 on special teams… Made 3 tackles, one of which was a sack.

Transfer portal background information

The NCAA Transfer Portal, which covers every NCAA sport at the Division I, II and III levels, is a private database with names of student-athletes who wish to transfer. It is not accessible to the public.

The process of entering the portal is done through a school’s compliance office. Once a player provides written notification of an intent to transfer, the office enters the player’s name in the database and everything is off and running. The compliance office has 48 hours to comply with the player’s request and that request cannot be refused.

Once a player’s name shows up in the portal, other schools can contact the player. Players can change their minds at any point and withdraw from the portal. However, once a player enters the portal, the current scholarship no longer has to be honored. In other words, if a player enters the portal but decides to stay, the school is not obligated to provide a scholarship anymore.

The database is a normal database, sortable by a variety of topics, including (of course) sport and name. A player’s individual entry includes basic details such as contact info, whether the player was on scholarship and whether the player is transferring as a graduate student.

A player can ask that a “do not contact” tag be placed on the report. In those instances, the players don’t want to be contacted by schools unless they’ve initiated the communication.

The window for FBS players to enter the portal opens Jan. 2 and closes on Jan. 16.
