Crimson Countdown: No. 1 Jayden Gibson

The Crimson Countdown is officially on for the 2025 Oklahoma football season. Everybody wants to forget about 2024 and move forward.
Head coach Brent Venables and staff have attempted to do that. New face calling the offense (Ben Arbuckle). Venables calling the defense, it’s now or never for this regime at OU in the SEC. No beating around the bush.
Every day as we get closer to kickoff, SoonerScoop.com will count down the days with you. Starting with No. 99 and working our way to No. 0, we’ll be there every step of the way.
Crimson Countdown: No. 1 Jayden Gibson
2024 stats: N/A (missed season with knee injury)
2025 outlook:
What’s left in the tank for Gibson? Sounds harsh, but it’s true. After everything he has been through in the last 13 months, where does he go from here?
If Gibson can make it all the way back, it would be one heck of a story. The type of feel-good comeback tale people want to root for. But it’s a lot to ask for, especially with the type of injury he had at the position he plays.

It’s clear OU still wants Gibson to be in the fold. That tells you the type of maturity he has been able to show in recent years. Eventually, though, it will be about being healthy again. To try to be that guy who was starting to figure it out at the end of the 2023 season.
His size is still something you cannot teach. And if any quarterback can get Gibson going even after all the time away, it’s John Mateer. So everybody will just cross their fingers and hope this story has a happy ending.
2025 wide receiver outlook
OU has totally revamped its wide receiver room this season. The Sooners lost six receivers to the transfer portal. But they added seven new guys, five from the portal and two true freshmen. They also return Deion Burks, who was expected to be their top receiver last season before he suffered several injuries. The biggest question for OU at receiver is can they stay healthy? The Sooners spent most of last season battling the injury bug. They’re hopeful the new additions will have better luck.
