In-state pitcher Kadyn Hines talks West Virginia commitment

West Virginia landed an in-state commitment from 2027 right-hander Kadyn Hines, and for the James Monroe (WV) product, the decision was a long time coming.
Hines first attended WVU camps as an eighth grader, when he stood just 5-foot-5 and 125 pounds. Now listed at 6-foot-4 and 179 pounds, the righty has seen major physical growth and so has his relationship with the Mountaineer program.
“I first started going to WVU camps in 8th grade and I was about 5’5 125, wasn’t even worth looking at,” Hines said. “But all in all, the facilities and the coaches at WVU are just so great. Over time I’ve built a strong connection with the coaches and making that connection just made the decision so much easier.”
That connection and comfort level made an impression, but so did the staff’s personality and the tools available to players on campus.
“Just how laid back and down to earth all the coaches are and they just make you feel so loved,” he said. “It also helps that they just got a brand-new pitching lab that is insane, but that’s the main thing that stood out the most!”
Hines brings a fastball that recently hit 93 MPH, but says there’s more to his game than velocity.
“I would say that I am a competitor. I cannot stand to lose but in the game of baseball there is so much failure, and to me that’s what makes it fun,” he said. “I bring good velo, good attitude, and I’m a good kid to this program!”
As a West Virginia native, committing to the state’s flagship program was especially meaningful.
“Being an in-state guy, my dream has always been to be a Mountaineer,” Hines said. “I’ve seen this team through all of their ups and downs, and seeing the progress that Coach Sabins has made is just unbelievable. It couldn’t make an in-state kid like me more happy to see the program succeed.”
