The Crimson Countdown is officially on for the 2023 Oklahoma football season. It’s the second season under head coach Brent Venables and expectations are high once again. The Sooners are looking to rebound from the uncharacteristic 6-7 season in 2022.

Every day as we get closer to kickoff, SoonerScoop.com will count down the days with you. Starting with No. 98 and working our way to No. 0, we’ll be there every step of the way.

Crimson Countdown: No. 86 Cody Johnson

2022 Stats: N/A

2023 Outlook: Everyone loves a good walk-on story. Follow college football enough and you’re bound to run into one that tugs at the heart strings. The grinder. The scout team player. Every team needs them. Doing the dirty hard work in the dark. It’s a thankless job.

Who’s No. 86 you might say. For Team 129 it’ll be Frisco (Texas) Wakeland freshman wide receiver Cody Johnson.

Johnson joined the Sooners football team in February, going through his first spring practice in Norman alongside another newcomer to the program in first-year wide receivers coach Emmett Jones.

2023 wide receiver outlook: It’s one of the most interesting position units heading into the Fall. Junior Jalil Farooq is the first name that will be brought up when looking to replace the production of Denver Bronco Marvin Mims. But who else can Dillon Gabriel count on?

Michigan transfer Andrel Anthony impressed his new teammates during the spring. Gavin Freeman and Drake Stoops serve as dependable options that can be used in various ways by offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby. LV-Bunkley-Shelton hopes to see more action during his second season in Norman.

Emmett Jones development of a young, unproven receiver corps will be important following the loss of Mims and tight end Brayden Willis. Two players that should get opportunities early in the season to prove themselves on the big stage are a pair of big bodied redshirt freshmen in Jayden Gibson and Nic Anderson.
