The first national signing period for college football runs from December 21-23. That puts it a week later than normal, which allows you even more time to familiarize yourself with the next class charged with helping restore Texas back to national prominence.

The preceding 2022 class is already off to a good start, but the way to win at a consistently high level is to stack talented class after talented class. At all times you need young players developing, creating competition, and providing valuable depth before becoming quality starters.

The top 5 contending 2023 class is just what Texas needed after the top 5 2022 class.

In the lead-up to NSD1, Inside Texas will offer profiles of each member of the 2023 signing class.

Next up, Jaydon Chatman.

The Player: Jaydon Chatman, OL, Killeen (Texas) Harker Heights, 6-foot-4, 299 pounds

The Rating: 91.86, On3 Consensus four-star

The Ranking:

The Recruitment: Similar to Texas classmates Connor Stroh and Andre Cojoe, Chatman’s first offer came from UT offensive line coach Kyle Flood. This recruitment had a burnt orange hue to it the whole time but Chatman had a diligent process and took official visits to Texas A&M, LSU, and OU. He committed to Texas during the late June wave after his official visit.

The Projection: Chatman played tackle in high school and has a chance to stick there on the right side, though it’s more likely he ends up at guard long-term. It’s possible he could play all five positions, though the goal is to always get a player in his NFL position if the roster and depth chart allows for it. For Chatman, that’s likely guard. Of the five offensive lineman in the class, he has a good chance to see the field first.

The Reasoning: “I picked Texas because every time I went down to Texas, it felt like home and a place I knew I could spend the next four years of my life as an adult and as a football player, to become better on and off the field, and the amount of opportunities the city of Austin presents is just perfect for me to do that.” – Jaydon Chatman

The Relationship: “My relationship with Coach Flood is really strong. I love Coach Flood and when I met him, I just knew he is going to get the best out of me all the time. And he is an amazing coach and could develop me throughout my college career.” – Chatman

The Education: “Business.” – Chatman

The Enrollment: Early enrollee, meaning January

The Final Word: When Kyle Flood sees a prospect he likes he wastes little time extending an offer. Chatman’s versatility and reasonably mature build could help him see the field relatively early, depending on need. A quality prospect, Chatman wouldn’t have looked out of place in the loaded 2022 class.
