MINNESOTA VS CAMPBELL HISTORY

Sunday evening will be just the second matchup all-time between Minnesota and Campbell and their first in 27 years, as they previously met on December 1, 1997, at Williams Arena. In that game, the Golden Gophers defeated the Fighting Camels 67-57.

LAST TIME OUT

Minnesota (6-5, 1-1 B1G): Last time out, the Golden Gophers defeated Texas Southern 89-53 to pick up their sixth win of the season. Cade Tyson had one of the best days in GopJaylen Crocker-Johnson, Isaac Asuma, and Bobby Durkin all finished with double-digit scoring efforts as well. The Gophers had 27 assists on their 28 made field goals.

Campbell (5-6, 0-0 CAA): Last time out, Campbell fell to Gonzaga on the road 98-70. Doyvdas Butka led the Fighting Camels with 19 points, and DJ Smith had 18 points as well in the loss. Before the loss, the Camels defeatd Division II Virginia-Lynchburg 149-62 and Ball State 69-64.

WHAT THEY SAID

Minnesota head coach Niko Medved: “Analytically, this will be by far the toughest of the “buy games” we’ve played. This game has been on my radar all year. They played Wisconsin to a five-point game with six minutes to go. Penn State and West Virginia struggled to hold them off. They are tough, physical, and have a great system. They pound the ball inside, which concerns me with our lack of depth in the interior and foul trouble. They aren’t going to roll over; they are going to compete. We’re coming off finals and heading toward Christmas break, so we really have to be cranked up and play well.”

PREDICTION

The Golden Gophers are coming off one of their best performances of the season last time out against Texas Southern, but have enjoyed some time off since then. Will they be a little rusty on Sunday? Campbell is one of the better non-conference opponents for the Gophers and by far their best “buy” game of the season, so don’t expect them to just roll over the Fighting Camels. Nonetheless, the Gophers are the better team here and should win by double-digits. Their three-point shooting has taken a step up in recent games, and if that continues on Sunday evening, the Gophers should position themselves well for another win.

Minnesota 85, Campbell 70
