Blaze 12, Bandits 10

The Blaze outslugged the Bandits on Tuesday, winning 12-10 while knocking 17 hits on the day. The scoring started in the first inning. Off Bandits starter Sarah Willis, Kayla Kowalik worked a bases-loaded walk. Then, McKenzie Clark doubled the lead with a sacrifice fly. In the home half, the Bandits cut the deficit in half when Erin Coffel laced an RBI triple off Blaze rookie Aliyah Binford.

A combined nine runs crossed the dish in the second inning. Back-to-back RBI doubles from Korbe Otis and Aubrey Leach chased Willis from the game, but the Blaze kept its foot on the gas. Off reliever Odicci Alexander, a pair of infield singles and sly baserunning by Kayla Kowalik and Danielle Gibson scored three more runs for the Blaze. The Bandits also chased Binford from the game in the second. Consecutive free passes walked in a pair of runs, making way for Bubba Nickles-Camarena to drive in two more on a single.

In a 7-5 game after two innings, both the Blaze and the Bandits tacked on in the third. Otis lifted a sacrifice fly, and Leach doubled in her second run of the game. In the bottom of the inning, the Bandits cut the lead to 9-8. Sydney McKinney singled in a run, and Morgan Zerkle drove in two more on a double to left field.

The Blaze responded immediately in the top of the fourth. Off reliever Taylor McQuillan, Aliyah Andrews’ sacrifice fly gave the Blaze a 10-8 edge. In the fifth, both teams failed to score in an inning for the only time today.

Both teams then added a run on Anissa Urtez’s RBI double for the Blaze and Delanie Wisz’s RBI groundout. Otis added her third RBI of the game in the top of the seventh, homering and adding to the Blaze lead.

The Bandits trailed by three entering the bottom of the seventh, but failed to complete the comeback. Zerkle singled in a run, but consecutive outs recorded by Blaze pitcher Alana Vawter ended the 12-10 game in favor of the Blaze.

Talons 4, Volts 0

Sam Landry for the Volts and Georgina Corrick for the Talons started this crucial, second half of the season matchup. Landry tossed four innings, allowing two runs. Corrick, however, was brilliant, pitching a complete-game shutout, striking out five and stamping the Talons’ first-place standing.

After a scoreless first frame, the Talons opened the scoring in the second. Sharlize Palacios doubled to left field, scoring Caroline Jacobsen from third. In the fourth, the Talons then doubled their lead with Sydney Romero’s RBI single. After four full innings, Corrick kept the Volts scoreless and the Talons held a 2-0 lead.

Facing Payton Gottshall in the fifth, Jadelyn Allchin knocked a solo homer to add to the Talons’ lead. After a 12-pitch at-bat, Caroline Jacobsen tacked on another run with an RBI double to left field.

Entering the seventh, the Talons held a 4-0 lead. Corrick would continue her dominant outing, completing the shutout and retiring the final five batters of the game.
