Nebraska Women's Basketball takes down Creighton in I-80 showdown

Nebraska women’s basketball (3-0) took down in-state rival Creighton (1-2) 84-50 on Wednesday night. The 34-point NU win tied the largest margin of victory between the two foes. The Huskers won 84-50 in 2005.
Meanwhile, the Big Red also snapped a three-game losing skid to the Bluejays. Head coach Amy Williams snagged her second win against the rival, as Creighton had also won eight of its last nine over Nebraska.
NU dominated on the defensive end, forcing 25 Bluejay turnovers. The Huskers’ aggressive defensive effort didn’t slow down there. In fact, they also heavily contested Creighton’s field goal attempts to hold them to 15-of-51 from the floor.

Additionally, the Huskers shot 29-of-62 (47%) from the field, while also nailing 10-of-27 (37%) from 3-point land. Interestingly enough, NU hadn’t made more than five 3-pointers against Creighton since its 75-67 victory on Nov. 17, 2008.
Here’s a recap following Nebraska’s I-80 showdown victory:
Huskers come out hot
Nebraska came out firing from tip-off, nailing its first four shots from the field to grab a 10-3 lead within the first three minutes. However, the Huskers’ offense cooled down, missing its next seven shots and not getting a bucket for nearly five minutes in the first quarter.
Additionally, the shot of the night came from junior forward Jessica Petrie after drilling a half-court buzzer-beater to put the Big Red up 17-9 entering the second quarter. Her 3-point bucket was drained from where Chadron would be located on the state’s shape at mid-court.
While the Huskers were finding their stride offensively to carry a 35-14 lead into the locker room, their defense took center stage. Hence, forcing 14 Bluejay turnovers and holding them to shoot 4-of-25 (16%) from the field in the first half.
Nebraska ended the half on a 14-0 scoring run and only allowed five points in the second quarter.
NU didn’t let off
After coming out of the locker room with a 21-point lead, NU kept its foot on the gas. Hailey Weaver and Callin Hake each nailed a 3-pointer to extend the Big Red’s lead to 25 within the first two minutes.
Hake’s rhythm beyond the arc didn’t let up. The 5-foot-8 senior guard scored a team-high eight points in the third quarter. She finished with 13 points, shooting 3-of-4 from deep.

Amiah Hargrove had herself quite the second half off the bench. The 6-foot-2 sophomore forward grabbed four boards while also adding six points.
Impact player of the game: Britt Prince
Entering with a team-leading average of 21 points, Britt Prince continued to carry the Huskers and set the tone with a swish on the first possession.
The 5-foot-11 sophomore guard shot 6-of-12 from the field, while also going 6-of-6 from the charity stripe to finish with a team-high 18 points. Prince also snagged seven rebounds, two of which were on the offensive end, along with dishing out three assists.
The Elkhorn, Neb. native entered shooting 67% from beyond the arc. However, all of her 18 points came from inside 3-point land. She didn’t even take a shot from three.
Prince posted a +28 plus/minus – tied with Petrie for the highest mark of any Husker – as Nebraska outscored Creighton by 28 points with her on the floor. She’s clearly made major strides in her game following her rookie season in Lincoln.
The Nebraska women will return to action on Sunday, Nov. 16, at noon inside the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D., where they will take on North Dakota State. The game can be seen on the Big Ten Network or heard on the Huskers Radio Network.
