OU quarterback John Mateer was listed as probable in Thursday’s SEC availability report. He was listed as questionable on Wednesday’s report. This means he is trending toward playing this week.

Mateer missed this past Saturday’s game against Kent State after having surgery on his right throwing hand during the bye week. His availability was up in the air for the Texas game on Saturday.

“He’s doing his normal protocol. He’s done zero good on good work,” coach Brent Venables said on Tuesday. “I don’t know anything about the injury. I’m just going to cut you off. I don’t know anything about the injury. So when they tell me he’s available, I’ll let y’all know.”

When asked about Mateer’s aggression to return quickly, Venables again said he didn’t know the timetable for his return.

“I just lean on the doctors. I’m not an expert in any of it. That’s literally the extent of it,” Venables said of Mateer. “John is doing no good-on-good work. So, it’s Michael (Hawkins) and Whitt (Newbauer) right now. If something changes, I’ll let you know. But I think if you’re gonna play, you’ve gotta do good on good, right? Throw some skelly. Hand the ball off. Play on third downs.”

One player who was questionable for the Sooners was wide receiver Keontez Lewis, who was taken off on a stretcher during the Kent State after running into the North end zone wall. Lewis has apparently recovered well.

“That was a scary situation, I think, for everyone in that stadium,” offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle said on Tuesday. “It kind of made my heart stop for a little bit just because of how much I enjoy being around Keontez, how much I enjoy love Keontez and the type of kid that he is and thinking about everything that he has in his personal life, too. That was a really scary situation. And so it was great to see him walk into the building the next day. He had a smile on his face.

“I think he has to do the proper protocols with the training staff and everything. But Keontez Lewis, what a great kid. Thank goodness that he’s all right and whenever he’s ready to play, he’ll be ready to play. I don’t know when that is.”

As for the rest of the availability report, after all, for the Sooners, it’s listed below.
