The first national signing period for college football runs from December 21-23. That puts it a week later than normal, which allows you even more time to familiarize yourself with the next class charged with helping restore Texas back to national prominence.

The preceding 2022 class is already off to a good start, but the way to win at a consistently high level is to stack talented class after talented class. At all times you need young players developing, creating competition, and providing valuable depth before becoming quality starters.

The top 5 contending 2023 class is just what Texas needed after the top 5 2022 class.

In the lead-up to NSD1, Inside Texas will offer profiles of each member of the 2023 signing class.

Next up, Sydir Mitchell.

The Player: Sydir Mitchell, DL, Oradell (N.J.) Bergen Catholic, 6-foot-5.5, 335-pounds

The Rating: 91.43, On3 Consensus four-star

The Ranking:

The Recruitment: Mitchell was one of the most coveted interior defensive line prospects in the country. Home state Rutgers was the first to offer in late January of 2020. He had at least 20 known Power 5 offers, including Texas, Georgia, Miami and Texas A&M. Mitchell began the official visit process as a lean to Georgia. After official visits to Georgia, Texas A&M, Miami and Texas, he committed to the Longhorns July 3, 2022. Texas initially offered February 1, 2022.

The Projection: The 6-foot-5.5, 335-pounder is a run stuffer that has the ability to take up two blockers, and free up teammates for one-on-one opportunities on the defensive line, or free up linebackers to scrape and fill freely. Mitchell has the ability to be more than a run stuffer at the next level long term. He has quick feet, and the ability to close on the ball and collapse the pocket. His pad level consistency, and developing an array of moves with refined technique will ultimately determine his ceiling.

The Reasoning: “(Bo Davis) was talking about how they want to play me in multiple positions, and not every school was talking to me about that. And that’s where I felt like that I’m a good enough player to play multiple positions. I’m a bigger guy, but I can move at the same time.” – Sydir Mitchell

The Relationship: “I sat down with myself and I said, ‘what’s the best place for me? You’ve seen all the schools and asked all the questions. So what is it going to be?’ I felt like Bo Davis is going to prepare me to be the best that I can. And no disrespect to any of the other coaches recruiting me. I felt like they could prepare me for the next level, but Coach Davis he’s been in this a long time, and it was the perfect fit for me.” – Mitchell.

The Final Word: Mitchell was one of the top defensive linemen on the board at Texas and Georgia. The Longhorns left zero doubt with Mitchell and family how much they covet him, and how versatile they believe he can be. Davis and Kyle Flood tag teamed this recruitment, and the relationship with Davis pushed Texas over the top. The family believes Texas is where Mitchell will best be developed to live his NFL dreams.
