There are 19 new starters at the Power 5 level, and four are in the Big 12 headlined by former On3 Consensus 5-star prospect Quinn Ewers. The conference with the most turnover through the portal at the position is the Pac-12, with seven.

Inside Texas gives a rundown of the 19 quarterbacks after the first week of games.

Week one game ball

Arizona’s Jayden de Laura wins the week one game ball over Caleb Williams. The Washington State transfer threw for 299 yards and four scores against a very well coached San Diego State team that went 12-2 last season. 

Big 12

Quinn Ewers (Ohio State to Texas)

Quinn Ewers beat out Hudson Card for the starting job in Austin after transferring from Ohio State in the spring. The marriage of Ewers’ downfield arm talent and Steve Sarkisian’s scheme should be a good one. Ewers threw his first collegiate pass Saturday night in a much anticipated first start for the former On3 Consensus 5-star prospect.

vs. UL-Monroe (52-10 W): 16 of 24 for 225 yards with 2 TD’s and 1 INT. 1 rush for -9 yards. 

Dillon Gabriel (UCF to Oklahoma)

After originally committing to UCLA, Dillon Gabriel flipped to Oklahoma to reunite with Jeff Lebby who was his UCF offensive coordinator. Gabriel took the field for the first time for the Sooners with 8,037 yards and 70 touchdowns in 26 career games. The redshirt junior will be a very good scheme fit in Lebby’s version of the Art Briles offense.

vs. UTEP (45-13 W): 15 of 23 for 233 yards and 2 TD’s. 6 rushes for 20 yards and a TD

Adrian Martinez (Nebraska to Kansas State)

Adrian Martinez wis playing his super senior season at Kansas State. Martinez has started 38 games in his career at Nebraska. He has passed for more than 8,000 yards, and rushed for over 2,000 yards. Martinez should help take some pressure off All-American tailback Deuce Vaughn.

vs. South Dakota (34-0 W): 11 of 15 for 53 yards. 13 rushes for 39 yards and a TD.

JT Daniels (Georgia to West Virginia)

JT Daniels is now on this third school as a redshirt senior. In Morgantown, Daniels is reuniting with former offensive coordinator Graham Harrell. The former On3 Consensus 5-star prospect has 5,054 career passing yards with 34 touchdowns and 17 interceptions following his first game for the Mountaineers Thursday night.

vs. Pittsburgh (38-31 L): 23 of 40 for 214 yards with 2 TD’s and 1 INT. 5 rushes for -23 yards and a TD

SEC

Spencer Rattler (Oklahoma to South Carolina)

Spencer Rattler took the ball at South Carolina with lofty expectations. The former On3 Consensus 5-star prospect enters the season with 4,595 yards passing in his career, which includes a 70.1% completion percentage. The redshirt junior is looking to re-ignite his career in Shane Beamer’s program.

vs. Georgia State (35-14 W): 23 of 37 for 227 yards and 1 TD with 2 INT’s. 4 rushes for -12 yards. 

Jayden Daniels (Arizona State to LSU)

Arizona State transfer Jayden Daniels started for the Bayou Bengals in the opener against Florida State. A former On3 Consensus 4-star prospect, Daniels started three years for the Sun Devils throwing for 6,024 yards with 32 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. The senior with 1,288 career rushing yards and 13 scores provides the LSU staff with an off schedule dimension to the offense.

vs. Florida State (24-23 L): 26 oof 35 for 209 yards with 2 TD’s. 16 rushes for 114 yards. 

Jaxson Dart (USC to Ole Miss)

Lane Kiffin’s program won a heated transfer recruiting battle over BYU and Oklahoma for Jaxson Dart. After starting three games for USC last fall, Dart hit the portal after Lincoln Riley was hired. The 6-foot-2, 215-pounder passed for 1,353 yards with nine touchdowns and five interceptions in six games while battling injury. Dart is viewed as a prospect with an NFL ceiling, but there is competition at Ole Miss. Sophomore and former On3 Consensus 4-star prospect Luke Altmyer is also seen as possessing a high ceiling.

vs. Troy (28-10 W): 18 of 27 for 154 yards with a TD and INT. 4 rushes for 40 yards. 

Pac-12

Caleb Williams (Oklahoma to USC)

True freshman phenom and former On3 Consensus 5-star Caleb Williams followed Lincoln Riley to USC. The sophomore showed major two-way playmaking in Norman last season, and could be a Heisman Trophy candidate this season in the Pac-12. 

vs. Rice (66-14 W): 19 of 22 for 249 yards with 2 TD’s. 6 rushed for 68 yards. 

Jack Plummer (Purdue to California)

Jack Plummer spent four seasons at Purdue and started 13 games before being beat out by former walk-on Aidan O’Connell. Plummer headed back to the West Coast from the portal, and opened the season as the starter for the Bears. Named to the Senior Bowl Watchlist, Plummer enters the season with 3,405 career passing yards with 26 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

vs. UC Davis (34-13 W): 23 of 35 for 268 yards with 3 TD’s and 1 INT. 3 rushes for -10 yards.

Emory Jones (Florida to Arizona State)

Former On3 Consensus 4-star recruit Emory Jones made the move to the Pac-12 to play for Herm Edwards after Anthony Richardson was set to take the job in Gainesville. The dual-threat quarterback entered the 2022 season with 3,499 career passing yards and 1,321 rushing yards with 38 touchdowns accounted for.

vs. Northern Arizona: 13 of 18 for 152 yards. 11 rushes for 48 yards and 2 TD’s.

Jayden de Laura (Washington State to Arizona)

After starting for two seasons in Pullman, Hawaii native Jayden de Laura transferred. The redshirt sophomore has been named Jedd Fisch’s leader of the program as the new staff is attempting to flip the roster in Tucson. Jayden de Laura entered the season with 3,684 passing yards and 28 touchdowns with 13 interceptions.

vs. San Diego State (38-20 W): 22 of 35 for 299 yards and 4 TD’s with 1 INT. 1 rush for -6 yards. 

Michael Penix Jr. (Indiana to Washington)

The redshirt senior landed at Washington, reuniting with former Indiana offensive coordinator Kalen DeBoer. Penix can put up numbers in the Pac-12 North, but health will be the key. It’s something he fought during his time at Indiana. He entered the season with 4,197 career passing yards with 29 touchdowns against 15 interceptions.

vs. Kent State (45-20 W): 26 of 39 for 345 yards and 4 TD’s. 4 rushes for 27 yards. 

Cameron Ward (Incarnate Word to Washington State)

One of the biggest hires new Washington State head coach Jake Dickert made was hiring FCS Incarnate Word head coach Eric Ward as offensive coordinator. That made the transfer of Cameron Ward a no brainer. Ward threw for over 4,600 yards last and nearly 50 touchdowns last season leading his team to the FCS playoffs. The junior enters the season on some NFL Draft boards. 

vs. Idaho (24-17 W): 25 of 40 for 215 yards and 3 TD’s. 5 rushes for 18 yards. 

Bo Nix (Auburn to Oregon)

The famous legacy recruit at Auburn is now in a battle for the starting job at Oregon with former On3 Consensus 4-star Ty Thompson. Nix is a former five-star recruit out of Alabama who had is fair share of ups and downs at Auburn. He enters the 2022 season with 7,251 career passing yards with 39 TD’s and 16 INT’s, along with 869 rushing yards and 18 scores.

vs. Georgia (49-3 L): 21 of 37 for 173 yards and 2 INT’s. 8 rushes for 37 yards.

Big 10

Casey Thompson (Texas to Nebraska)

The Texas transfer made his debut last week in Ireland playing for new offensive coordinator Mark Whipple. Nebraska lost to Northwestern with Casey Thompson hitting on 25 of 42 passes for 355 yards. The redshirt senior started 10 games in 2021 for Steve Sarkisian throwing for 2,113 yards and 24 TD’s while battling through a right thumb injury.

vs. Northwestern (31-28 L): 25 of 42 for 355 yards and 1 TD with 2 INT’s. 3 rushes for -18 yards and a TD.

vs. North Dakota (38-17 W): 14 of 21 for 193 yards with 2 TD’s and 1 INT. 6 rushes for -2 yards. 

Tommy DeVito (Syracuse to Illinois)

After losing his job to Garrett Shrader at Syracuse last season, Tommy DeVito entered the portal at landed at Illinois. The New Jersey native beat out Art Sitkowski in fall camp and opened as the starter at Illinois last Saturday in a Week 0 win against Wyoming. The former On3 Consensus 4-star prospect has 4.060 career passing yards with 30 touchdowns against 12 interceptions after his first game in an Illini uniform.

vs. Wyoming (38-6 W): 27 of 37 for 194 yards and 2 TD’s.

vs. Indiana (23-20 L): 21 of 35 for 232 yards and 2 TD’s with 1 INT. 11 rushes for 13 yards. 

Connor Bazelak (Missouri to Indiana)

It is expected that Missouri transfer Connor Bazelak will start the opener for Indiana, and new offensive coordinator Walt Bell. The Ohio native was named SEC Freshman of the Year in 2020 but dealt with injuries all of last season. The 6-foot-3, 224-pound junior enters the season with 5,058 career passing yards and 23 touchdowns with 17 interceptions.

vs. Illinois (23-20 W): 28 of 52 for 330 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT. 5 rushes for -3 yards. 

ACC

Kedon Slovis (USC to Pittsburgh)

Kedon Slovis took over for Kenny Pickett making his first start Thursday night against West Virginia. The senior has had issues staying healthy throughout his career. In 26 starts, he has recorded 7,576 passing yards and 58 touchdowns.

vs. West Virginia (38-31 W): 16 of 24 for 308 yards with 1 TD. 7 rushes for -20 yards.

Grant Wells (Marshall to Virginia Tech)

Head coach Brent Pry took over at Virginia Tech, and immediately jumped into the transfer portal to address quarterback. The Hokies landed Grant Wells, who started for two years at Marshall and threw for over 5,000 yards. Making the transition to the ACC is something to watch for a signal caller that threw 22 interceptions in 715 attempts at Marshall.
